Warren Spector: Epic Mickey May Be the Best Looking Game on Wii
Epic Mickey designer Warren Spector had big things to say about the game in a new interview. Despite the Wii being weaker technically than the PS3 and Xbox 360, Warren Spector wanted to prove a point with the game and the graphics.
“This is a Disney game. It’s going to have the lush, beautiful, bright colours of a Disney feature film on the Wii. And I want players and I want our competition to think ‘holy cow I didn’t know you could do that on a Wii.’”
“For my money, Epic Mickey may be the best looking Wii game ever. The critical thing is I believe we’ve captured the spirit of the character, and the essence of Disney. That’s what we needed to do.
“When you start any project you have to know what you want to achieve,” he said.
Warren Spector also mocked some of the "brown" looking games and also noted that the developers had a very limited time to show passerbys at E3 that Epic Mickey doesn't look like any other game.
“I remember when we started this project I told the team that some day we’ll be at E3, and there are going to be 2,500 games on display, and 1,800 are going to be brown. ‘Welcome to brown world!’ And the others are going to be [mock enthusiasm] hyper-real! Everything looks real now!
“I told the team we’re going to have five seconds – five seconds for people walking past our exhibitor booth to know that Epic Mickey doesn’t look like any other game.”
A good showcase of Epic Mickey's graphics is the first part to the game's opening scene which uses real-time graphics. What do you think, does it look like one of the best games on Wii, if not the best?

“I want our competition to think ‘holy cow I didn’t know you could do that on a Wii’”
Warren Spector wants to send a message to the Wii sceptics of the development world with his latest project, Epic Mickey.
Nintendo’s home console has famously modest tech specs when compared to its direct competitors, but Spector insists Epic Mickey will show just how far the system can be pushed.
“This is a Disney game,” the Junction Point founder tells Develop.
“It’s going to have the lush, beautiful, bright colours of a Disney feature film on the Wii. And I want players and I want our competition to think ‘holy cow I didn’t know you could do that on a Wii’.”
Though there might be a resistance from some corners of the industry to develop Wii titles, Spector insists the console can host games that truly stand out from the crowd.
“For my money, Epic Mickey may be the best looking Wii game ever. The critical thing is I believe we’ve captured the spirit of the character, and the essence of Disney. That’s what we needed to do.
“When you start any project you have to know what you want to achieve,” he said.

Now I want this game even more than I did before. That looked really cool. I'm more of a Disney fan than a Wii fan, so I'd get this game no matter what (unless it looked like crap).
Well it definitely looks awesome. But there are a lot of excellent wii games out there. Best "looking"...I'd say it's in the running. Best game overall? Highly unlikely, but I won't fully judge it until I try it.
meh... I was hyped, then less, now with the vids it looks like it'll be fun, so hyped again. I wish this succeed, it has everything to do it too.
It'll be a tough one to top Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 and Kirby's Epic Yarn, but that footage did look mighty fine, the sorceror's character model is especially terrific; look at the bump mapping on his hands!
I agree 100% on his "brown" comments too. The push for realism often comes at the expense of art, sadly.
Looks superb, but time will tell if the actual in game maintain that level of quality.
That being said, being the best on the Wii isn't that hard since most developers really don't even try that much. Heck outside of the Super Mario Galaxy games, Nintendo themselves are often guilty of this as well.
I saw that clip the other day. It looks like it's coming along well. :) I might get this afterall.
idk, if its the 'best' but it certainly looks great and I can't wait to buy it.
While I don't think it is the best looking on the wii, I do think that it looks really nice and is nothing to complain about, and I really like the art style.
The art direction is top-notch. Exactly what you'd expect from the most legendary animation house in the world.
They've done a really good job, that opening looked incredibly good.
Though they should've said something a bit more realistic like "is one of the best looking.." which i think is true
I have to say, they've done a damn good job there. It actually looks REALLY good. Just look at the detail on the hand of the sorcerer.
Though I believe the best Wii graphics belong to The Last Story. Note that this is just my personal opinion.
