Rumour: PS2 Playback, Blu-Ray Backups in New PS Jailbreak

The drama in the PS Jailbreak story intensifies. The product, unveiled only a few weeks ago, was the first to successfully allow homebrew applications to run on the PS3, as well as backed up PS3 games, i.e. those copied from the blu-ray disc to the HDD using the Backup Manager, and thus opening the door for piracy, as the backups can be copied to an external hard drive and uploaded to the internet to be downloaded by people around the world.

Sony gained an injunction, and the product was banned in Australia. Sony is also appealing to courts in other countries to ban the product. Meanwhile, it is issuing console bans to anyone found using the hack, which was discovered to be detectable if the user is connected to the PlayStation Network.

Now there could be a new reason for people to buy PS Jailbreak at its exorbitant price. The creators, OzModChips, pleaded with PS3 owners to buy the original for "warranty and support,, and that is making itself visible now.

According to posts on three different hacking communities, the Backup Manager is getting an update to version 1.1. They disagree on the exact details of this update, but all three mention the following:

  • Support for future Firmware updates (this is likely a promise, rather than a feature)
  • Support for NTFS-formatted disk drives.
  • Blu-ray discs can be copied onto a hard disk
  • MKV files can be played
  • Most importantly, PS2 and PS1 games can be backed up onto the hard disk and played on any model of the PS3.

This could be a hoax, but it would have to be rather elaborate to be posted on three different message boards, in two different languages. More people could be willing to bend the law and risk a console ban to jump on board the homebrew train.

According gaf there is indeed PS2 emulator in PS3 FW but it's slow and crappy. That's why Sony hasn't enabled it for normal users.

@Bmaker11

Its a false misconception that Ps3 games are 50 GB. Only Ps3 exclusives are over 10 Gigs... a lot of them do it in order to layer the data multiple times on the disc for easier and faster loading. Largest PS3 game is God of War 3 at 40 GB.

Otherwise here are some examples of PS3 games and sizes.

I would use it for watching MKV files and nothing more. I don't care much to wait for 50GB of game to download

disolitude (on 07 September 2010)

Bleemcast...v2?

weaveworld (on 07 September 2010)

Or...

Sony wanted to milk the non-playability of ps2 games as long as they could.

Silver-Tiger (on 07 September 2010)

@kaufer:

We don't know if Sony secretly worked on a PS2 emulator and added it with an update. Maybe it was already in the FW 3.30? From the PSP I know Sony added a lot of features in earlier FW updates, but enabled them later on. I guess this way they test the stability before enabling the said functions.

Also, MKV palyback should very well possible. It's an easy open-source codec, and the PS3 is actually already able to play it. MKV is just a container for many different codecs. So if the PS3 is able to play DivX, Mpeg1 & 2, H.264 and WMV, it should be possible to deal with MKV.
The problem is, however, that the MKV container could also contain codecs which are not yet playbable with the PS3. A simple solution would to deactivate all other imcompatible codecs in the MKV container. That would mean not all MKV files would run, but most should do. Unfortunately Sony hasn't done it yet.

The PS2 backward compatibility sounds like BS. The PS3 console versions with hardware emulation and software emulation both uses either 1 or 2 PS2 semiconductors to work. The 60GB and 20GB models that have hardware emulation both have the Emotion Engine CPU and PS2's Graphics Synthesizer chip. While the 80GB models even with its software emulation is not entirely software based. The 80GB models have a cell based EE emulator but it still needs the GS chip to have PS2 BC. The PS2's GS chip is also not compatible with PS3 current gfx chip thats why it was needed in the first place. Both the Emotion engine and the GS chip have been removed from all later models thats why there is no PS2 BC anymore. So for hackers to enable the BC feature they not only need the EE emulator but also need to create the an emulator for the Graphics Synthesizer. Which if you haven't noticed sony haven't done or are incapable of doing otherwise they would have patented it already. The EE emulation tech was already patented by sony BTW.

One thing though, PS2 games can be run from hard disk already and that can be done without PSjailbreak and only with 60GB and 20GB models. They might be looking for a way to have the PS2 usbloader included in the jailbreak but to say that it will work will all models maybe a deliberate lie to make sales.

As for making MKV files playable, i don't know. The x360 have been hacked for years now but you still can't play mkv files without streaming or converting.

L.C.E.C. (on 06 September 2010)

If this makes PS2 backward compatibility a reality... then fuck you sony, I'm going to go buy some used PS2 games. Namely MGS2:S and MGS3:S.

Then, if I can ever get a copy of MGS:TTS, I'll be content (mostly) ^_^

RLPComboKing (on 06 September 2010)

No everything these people want to do with homebrew is illegal btw.

binary solo (on 06 September 2010)

Best thing Sony can do to counter this is a PS2 emulation FW update and make PS2 games available for DL on PSN for same price as PS1 classics. There are a shit load of PS2 games I always wanted to play, but didn't have the time or money.

I'd get the Jailbreak for homebrew and PS2 playback ability if I had a spare PS3 that I didn't ever connect to PSN.

Barozi (on 06 September 2010)

mkv and PS2 game support ?
sounds like things are getting interesting now.

kevin the wiiite (on 06 September 2010)

What's with the "bending the law" thing? I thought that the EFF won an exemption in the DMCA for jailbreaking recently.

slowmo (on 06 September 2010)

Wonder if sony will actually look at the features people are trying to add to their console and move to make them a standard feature. The main reason the 360 got a lot of the features it has this generation is they looked at what people hacked the original xbox to do. I'd certainly welcome both Sony and Microsoft making improvements to their codec support.

Still not interested in getting one unless we see some movement on the homebrew scene.

Stefl1504 (on 06 September 2010)

I am really tempted to get one now!

Ssenkahdavic (on 06 September 2010)

If this is true and there is some hidden PS2 B/C in the PS3 (that just is not enabled) Sony is retarded for not releasing it.

This would almost have to be the case too, since I highly doubt anyone made a PS2 emulator for the PS3.

HabinoBR (on 06 September 2010)

Sony could counter attack this in fact putting PS2 Classics on PSN or make more Classics HD...

Kantor (on 06 September 2010)

Hey, I put the thing about console bans!

The Ghost of RubangB (on 06 September 2010)

This is your 3rd article about this. Are you sure you're not selling them on the side?

reidlosdog (on 06 September 2010)

PIracy on the PSN!! Who would have thought? Not like you can download your game onto your PS3 via browser and not pay a dime for new games. Not like that at all.

Sony losing millions, sounds like the trend of the past 4 years! Go Sony!!

Silver-Tiger (on 06 September 2010)

Wow. If this is true, then this thing might acutally get interesting. The problem is that the pirates gain additional reasons to defend this.

Netyaroze (on 06 September 2010)

If this is true then the whole PS Jailbreak thing could be good for everyone whith a PS3. Because then Sony could add (or activate ?) the PS2 Emulator on every PS3 to decrease the appeal of PS Jailbreak.

d21lewis (on 06 September 2010)

I don’t think its true but imagine if it is. Imagine if newer PS3's had the ability to play PS2 games and the only reason they couldn't id because Sony locked the feature............

IMU1808 (on 06 September 2010)

Lol. I call BS for one obvious reason.

Zkuq (on 06 September 2010)

Pretty big, though unless the functionality already exists in the console, I doubt this is real. If Sony has had trouble doing it, I doubt someone else could do it in such a short time. But if Sony has already added it but hasn't decided to enable it, then that's a whole different case.
