The Real Reason Final Fantasy Is Called Final Fantasy

It turns out in an interview that Square Enix Executive Producer Akitoshi Kawazu has debunked the myth behind the origin of Final Fantasy's name. The game wasn't called Final Fantasy because it could've been Square's "final fantasy" title since they were going into bankruptcy when they made the game, but for a completely different reason.

Kawazu gave the reason as this:

“It was something that was decided a long time ago, so my memory might be a bit faulty, but I think one of the things we had decided up front was that we wanted a title that could be abbreviated as FF. That abbreviation has special meaning. So we came up with many different titles, and Final Fantasy was one of them. From there, I think we were quick to make the call. There were some concerns about calling something ‘final’ from the get-go, but in the end we all warmed up to it. On a side note, one other option we liked was Fighting Fantasy, but it was the name of a game-book series by legendary game designer Steve Jackson, so we canned the idea. I wonder what would have happened if we didn’t realize this and went with the Fighting Fantasy option.”

It seems that for a long time we were all being misled by speculation. Unfortunately he never gave the reason why the abbreviation "FF" has a special meaning to them. It'll take a while for this to sink in but it's interesting to know the real reason many years after the original Final Fantasy released.

Hence why Sakaguchi's latest game is called "The Last Story". Sorry, but I don't believe this.

Soriku (on 07 September 2010)

@RV

You're just speculating yourself. I don't see why he wouldn't mention it if that was also the case. I'm reporting what he said as fact and as far as I can see he said nothing about the old myth. That's my evidence.

If you're so positive the old myth could be true, why don't you give me your evidence instead of just passing what you're saying off?

tolu619 (on 07 September 2010)

OOOHHH!!

RVDondaPC (on 07 September 2010)

@ Soriku
The two stories are not mutually exclusive in any way. I just gave a very reasonable example of how both could be true. Without the follow up question and confirmation that the "myth" origin was not true there is no reason to assume that it is not true. He doesn't specify either way. You are making assumptions and passing them off as facts. That is not just being the messenger. That is being an irresponsible reporter. You can point out that it may mean the other origin story is not true but to just flat out and say it with no real evidence is poor judgement.

tiachopvutru (on 06 September 2010)

@Kantor: I don't believe in that reasoning, either, but one reason why FF as 6 x 6 = 36 as a "perfect square" can be better than the others is because number 6 is also a perfect number, hence giving the "perfect" an additional meaning.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perfect_number

kain_kusanagi (on 06 September 2010)

@ Kantor

36 could have some kind of meaning to the team. Like there were 36 team members or they were on the 36th floor, or their office number or street number was 36. Who knows.

Kantor (on 06 September 2010)

@kain_kusanagi: In that case, it would work for any two letters. AA - 1*1 = 1. ZZ - 26 * 26 = a square.

kain_kusanagi (on 06 September 2010)

@ nandakoryaaa "FF = 255 or 11111111 or -1"

I still think it's that F is the 6th letter of the English alphabet. If "F" = 6 than we can write "FF" as 6 x 6 = 36. That's a square number, also known as a "perfect square".

Squaresoft probably just wanted their game to be perfect hence naming their game a "perfect square". Plus it has the double meaning of "Perfect Square Soft".

Soriku (on 06 September 2010)

"and his company I hear is experiencing very similar issues as Squaresoft had back in the day when FFI was realised"

Except Mistwalker isn't going into bankruptcy...

IMU1808 (on 06 September 2010)

I think "RVDondaPC" provided a pretty good explanation. Both stories could indeed be true.

Soriku (on 06 September 2010)

"The only person who says the other story is not true is the author of this article which isn't very responsible reporting since the quote doesn't contradict the "myth" at all. "

What are you talking about? He was asked for the reason they chose the FF name and that's the reason he gave. It's not my fault it's completely different from what you're thinking because he didn't mention the reason of it being called FF because it could've been their last title at all. Don't shoot the messenger.

theprof00 (on 06 September 2010)

Well, the letter F doesn't exist in the Japanese language..
Maybe that has something to do with it.
Or maybe as Rubang pointed out with his textbook copypaste, they were huge foo fighters fans.

cromeros (on 06 September 2010)

in chilean... PLOP!!!

jneul (on 06 September 2010)

also isn't ironic how his latest title is called the last story which is very similar in name:-D and his company I hear is experiencing very similar issues as Squaresoft had back in the day when FFI was realised mwhaha

jneul (on 06 September 2010)

this must be fake the original creator told us a different story, and I would much rather believe that than this

nandakoryaaa (on 06 September 2010)

and Kawazu is a frog

nandakoryaaa (on 06 September 2010)

FF = 255 or 11111111 or -1

Carl2291 (on 06 September 2010)

lol Christian, jealous of Cloud :')

OT:
Nice to finally have this cleared up!!

bad22 (on 06 September 2010)

Because it's has been milked to death and SE is telling gamers that this would be Last

iasta (on 06 September 2010)

@Kain

Or FF as 256 in hexadecimals, that's the biggest number for a byte. So they want do the biggest game possible.

RVDondaPC (on 06 September 2010)

Neither of those stories really contradict eachother. It could be that they wanted something with the FF initials, came up with Final Fantasy as one of the many and people started getting on board with the name because it could have been their final one if it didn't succeed so they choose that. One origin is why they came up with final fantasy the other origin is why they choose final fantasy over the rest of the lot. Both are true. The only person who says the other story is not true is the author of this article which isn't very responsible reporting since the quote doesn't contradict the "myth" at all.

My name is Tyler because my dad wanted all his kids to have a Y as the second letter in their names.(ryan and dylan are my older brothers) But why wasn't I kyle? Because my dad liked ty cobb so he named me after him. So is my name tyler because my dad wanted a Y as the second letter or because he liked Ty cobb? It's both.

darthdevidem01 (on 06 September 2010)

@christian

So you hate FF7 because it was used as a FF news icon?

Thats ridiculous, get a grip. Besides Cloud >>>>>>> Squall PLUS Tidus

NOO this version of why its called FF isn't melodramatic enough!
I liked the other version!

kain_kusanagi (on 06 September 2010)

I don't know what the significance of a double "f" is, but if you could look at it in numbers.

FF translated = 66 or added = 12 or multiplied = 36. It depending on how you treat F as the 6th letter in the alphabet.

A double "F" (FF) could be a square number or a "perfect square" number.

You see a number like 9 can be written as 3 x 3.

If "F" = 6 and we treat it like a square number than you have 6 x 6 = 36 which is a perfect square.

A company called "Squaresoft" names their game a "perfect square".

I don't know, maybe that's what they were going for.

Severance (on 06 September 2010)

Fun Fact! ,

Fun Fact is abbreviated as FF :-D

gekkokamen (on 06 September 2010)

weird for these Japanese companies to think so much about English names for RPGs back in the NES era when all but a bunch of thousand sales came from their home country. Maybe it was catchy to name Dragon Quest in English "Doragon Kuesuto" to follow up the success of Dragon Ball series back in 1986, and allude to the also popular Dungeons and Dragons pen and paper RPG also popular in Japan. I think this may be one major reason they wanted the title in English "Fainaru Fantaji".

Hynad (on 06 September 2010)

The other story isn't a myth at all. Sakaguchi himself explained it many times through interviews over the last 20 or so years. This guy is just trying to rewrite history. It's either that, or they did want a title that had the same meaning behind Final Fantasy (Last game) all along and came up with Final Fantasy as the criteria they were looking for was that for whatever reason it had to be abbreviated to FF.

Christian973 (on 06 September 2010)

Don't believe it. Sounds so fake. Also why the hell must cloud be used as a Final Fantasy news icon? That is one of the reasons why i hate FF7. Why can't it be Terra, Squall, or Tidus?

The Ghost of RubangB (on 06 September 2010)

They wanted to join the ranks of Final Fight, Fatal Fury, Fatal Frame, the Fantastic Four, Family Feud, Fancy Feast, Frosted Flakes, the Foo Fighters, and Fear Factor(y). Sounds legit to me. (http://acronyms.thefreedictionary.com/FF)

dystopia (on 06 September 2010)

Bogus

Canyarion (on 06 September 2010)

Why would Japanese care about an abbrivation in English? ...

rutea7 (on 06 September 2010)

i believe the other story better, this one sounds really fake.

zarx (on 06 September 2010)

first duke nukem in a playable state and a likely release window, and now this. My world is falling apart, the end is nigh people, everybody panic...

hatmoza (on 06 September 2010)

I don't believe it. You guys will eat it up, but I find it hard to believe that it took over 20 fucking years to debunk that popular myth.
