Batman: Arkham City Development is Complete, Pending Some Polish
On the tail of one of the longest development cycles ever comes a story of an incredibly short one.
According to a report from SystemLink, the main development process for Batman: Arkham City is complete. That seems incredibly fast, even considering that the team placed a well-hid secret about Arkham City in Arkham Asylum. All that remains for developer Rocksteady is putting the finishing polish on the game along with adding and balancing out new features.
The sequel is planned to have an ability called the 'Boost Grapple' which send Batman into the air, allowing him to glide throughout the city. There are side missions being planned and even the potential for some co-op action. According to SystemLink, when a developer was questioned about the possibility of co-op, he responded "We're not talking about that right now."

If the original is any indication, it's a safe bet that Arkham City is going to have a good mix of sandbox and linearity. Any company that can blend stealth and combat certainly has the ability to balance exploration with clear direction.
Arkham Asylum only came out a little over a year ago for consoles, and Arkham City has been promised to be at least four times larger than its predecessor. According to comments made to CVG, Rocksteady co-founder and director Sefton Hill stated that "we have had to seriously scale up our art team in order to bring the same level of detail to Arkham City, which is about 4-5 times bigger than Arkham Asylum."

Hill also added in what seems to be a brief moment of clarity for the games industry that Batman will begin Arkham City with much of the same equipment that he had at the end of the first title. That is of course provided he doesn't drop his utility belt down a sewer in the first five minutes of the game.
Batman: Arkham City is due out Q3 2011 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Windows PC.

That is a quick dev period AND a long period of polish. Wonder what's up with that . . . ?
The screenshots are just FANTASTIC.
Unless they completely revamped the gameplay in some way, this game will be GOTY material. No doubt.
