Inafune: "RE6 to Arrive ASAP; Japanese Geniuses Obsolete"
Capcom exec Keiji Inafune (the creator of Mega Man, and a key part in the success of Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, Onimusha, Dead Rising... the list goes on) had a recent interview with Spanish game blog 3D Juegos and was remarkably direct with some of his responses, uncommon in this age of doublespeak and hyperbole. There were a few gems in there, too, like this bit where he teased Resident Evil 6 (pardon the Google Translate):
"Given the great success which led to us Resident Evil 5, we want Resident Evil 6 hits the market as soon as possible. In fact, Capcom will have news about this soon ..."
"Soon" is a good time for a RE6 announcement. But wait, there's more! When asked about whether the West had truly surpassed the East in the realm of game development, a statement that several of Inafune's colleagues have asserted as fact, he responded:
"In the West there are many truly creative people working in this sector is a reality. The problem I detected is that during the course of recent years, many of these Japanese geniuses have gone obsolete, gradually. The worst thing is that the vast majority do not."
"Obsolete." Harsh, Keiji. Harsh.

this man's comments continue to astound and disappoint me capcom i'm afraid are totally losing the plot
I know it unpopular to say, but i really enjoyed RE5. I can understand the dissapointments with RE5, i had the same feelings with Fallout 3 which also replaced some original design elements for better and worse.
I think what Inafune means by "obsolete" is that Japanese games today and previously in the 2000s did not sell as well as Western developed games. Henceforth, all these Nintendo TV pieces with Sakamoto, Miyamoto and other Japanese diva developers is nothing more than an exercise in aggrandizing their ego when it is unwarranted.
This is not to say the West does not have our diva developers. Off my head I can name, Cliff Brzezinski, Peter Molyneux, Sid Meier, Warren Spector, John Romero, and American McGee.
RE6? Nonsense. Resident Evil died with RE0. RE4,5 and 6 are only Resident Evil by name.
RE5 was terrible. You got massive sales because of RE4. When RE6 comes out you will discover this.
Unfortunately Capcom will make more RE5 because they will mistakenly see this as the reason it got so many sales.
Also yes capcom has sucked this generation. I haven't yet played a capcom game this gen that I thought "wow that's fantastic". Sounds like he's just making excuses, "it's not us, it's all japanese companies" Ummm..nintendo?
i'm really not like how out of context the title is. You missed out on the most important phrase: 'many of..' not 'all' as the title would imply.
Japan has never been able to complete it's just that most of you were never gamers to start with and so never went outside the realms that bound you on the NES/SNES...
"Capcom's been crap this gen"
Disagree; RE5 was indeed a disappointment, but Monster Hunter Tri, Zack and Wiki, Tatsunoko vs Capcom and the retro Megaman games were great.
@MattAnderson: Oh you know the 80s, 90s (both arcade and home) to the early 00s. I take it you just got into gaming this gen, that or you've been lobotomized. Anyway, Inafune's self hating routine on Japanese developers is getting old. Sure, Capcom's been crap this gen but Miyamoto, Mikami, Suda 51, Kamiya, Itagaki, Yamauc...somebody (the GT guy), Nomura, Kojima, Ueda, ect they're all doing fine. Sure Japan's had it rough on HD this gen but things are shaping up nicely for a great 2nd half. Anyway, back to the Vanquish demo.
"When asked about whether the West had truly surpassed the East in the realm of game development"
When hasn't this been the case?
I loved to play RE5 with my friend, one of the best games I played of today days.
"And for those saying go back to the old style, I hope to hell not. Maybe some people like broken controls but I know I don't."
This. Awkward fixed camera angles ftl.
@pbroy: It does look like him...
Anyway R.E 1-3 are all in my top 10 games of all time while R.E.5 is probably in my top 20-25
while R.E.4 is probably not even top 30 so...please go back to Survival Horror!

I hove it to be better than RE5, cause for me was a dissapointment, I only finished RE5 one time, RE4 like 15 that IS a GAME, I hope RE6 be similiar.
Ah the same guy that did RE5 is leading RE6. Ugh well maybe they'll start a whole new story and I won't have to worry about it destroying the rest of the series haha. And for those saying go back to the old style, I hope to hell not. Maybe some people like broken controls but I know I don't. But I would like the games to be creepier or scarier as so far no RE game has been for me.
So I'll await RE6 with caution but maybe they can surprise me. Although without Mikami, hard to tell.
After the massively disappointing RE5 this better be good.
I hope for a RE1-3 style game.
The first step to this is to always ignore Nintendo.
The second step to this is to always ignore Nintendo
Inafune, stop being so self-defacing. Japan is still just as innovative and brilliant as the West is, if not more. Miyamoto, Masahiro Sakurai, Sakaguchi, Matsuno, Itagaki, Atlus, Vanillaware, Mikami, Arc System Works, and many others are brilliant people with ideas that the West would never even think about. I mean, hell, one of the biggest genres right now (third-person shooters) was born in Japan. CAPCOM is still brilliant and so are a lot of developers (except, maybe, KONAMI who have turned self-xenophobic and Square-Enix who are going through a phase with pampering the overrated Nomura for no reason). Japan's genius is still there, though it is a pity that too many people don't realize that.
@Jordahn
What he actually says is "The worst thing is that most of them don't realize this (becoming obsolete) "
Game Republic, Team Ico, From Software and Ignition Entertainment (Tokyo) say Hi
"In the West there are many truly creative people working in this sector is a reality. The problem I detected is that during the course of recent years, many of these Japanese geniuses have gone obsolete, gradually. The worst thing is that the vast majority do not."
Last sentence is a contradiction to the previous one. Current translation implies that it's bad that the majority of "Japanese geniuses" are NOT "obsolete" which makes no sense. Need better translation.
Bayonetta and Vanquish called...they want you to only refer to currently employed Capcom Japanese Geniuses as obsolete.
After RE5 this might be one of my biggest most wanted titles of all time !!!
i was JUST talking about with my friend while playing campaign with him in RE5..... i think he heard us ? =s
@carl
lost in nightmares is a perfect example or perfect atmosphere with co-op. They do re6 like like LIN and it will be awesome.
I hope they go back to being a survival horror with this one.
And HOPEFULLY remove the co-op. I want atmosphere this time please.
I think hes wrong, the big JP ips are based on names like HIdeo Kojima, or Tetsuya Nomura, the games those kinds of developers produce have not evolved and i think that is why their respective genres have become stagnant. however i dont think that JP developers have become obsolete - i think theres probabily loads out there who are still very talented, Bayonetta, Vanquish, Dragon Quest etc. probabily loads i dont know about. i think big names overshadow the new talent from blossoming, thats all, theres still loads of fantasic games and developers in Japan, imo.
@superchunk im pretty sure re5 with move will be almost exactly like RE4Wii
news on RE6 will prbly be at TGS
While I loved RE4, I haven't played much more than the demo for RE5. In fact this is the one game where I've considered buying Move as I hate dual analog and hopefully RE5 with Move would be like RE4Wii.
