Background:

Last year VGChartz ran a series of articles that ranked the top ten games for a number of modern systems including the 360, Wii, and PS3.  The voting was handled by the staff and a small “reader’s choice” section was added with the reader’s opinions.  A year has come and gone, and tastes change, so we decided to see what kind of games you guys wanted listed in a top ten this time, except we are handling things differently this time.  Not only will the list be compiled entirely by you, the fans, but we will go through a large number of game systems all the way back to the 1970’s with the Atari 2600 to modern day.  We hope to do these over a few weeks, so stay tuned for your favorite systems!  Since our readers are a diverse group, be prepared for some surprises!

Method:

Our voting was carried out on the forums, where we asked patrons to list their top 5 SNES games in order, and numerical values were placed on the rankings.  After compiling all the totals, this is the list that we came up with.

History Lesson:

So we all know how Nintendo helped to bring gaming back from certain oblivion back in the 1980’s right?  What about their follow up to the popular Nintendo Entertainment System / Famicom?  By the time Nintendo decided to create a new system, the NES was starting to show its age.  Both the TurboGrafx16 and the Sega Genesis were making new fans due to an increase in graphical and sound capabilities that 16 bit games offered.  The SNES was released well after Sega’s second entry into gaming history, but somehow managed to sell enough units to be considered the best selling and most successful gaming system of the 16 bit era.  This era in gaming is notable because it was one of the worst “console wars” in terms of competitive banter, smear campaigns, fan allegiances and just sheer rivalry.  You didn’t come here to learn though, now let’s look at some games!

10. Final Fantasy 4

After the success of the last three Final Fantasy games turned out to be enough to not only turn around the then failing company, Squaresoft, but it made them comfortable to try “something new” with their first 16 bit RPG.  Final Fantasy 4 was notable because it contained a far more advanced narrative than its predecessors and a lot of innovations that remained in the series well into the modern era.  Final Fantasy 4 was also the second Final Fantasy to make the long journey to the west, getting redubbed Final Fantasy 2, as it was only the second game in the series to do so.  The popularity of this game has survived the time, allowing it to be re-released multiple times as well as a sequel.

9. Secret of Mana

The first game in the “Mana” series was a lowly spin-off from the then behemoth franchise that was Final Fantasy.  It was a Nintendo Game boy game, and was released over here as Final Fantasy Adventure and in Japan as Seiken Densetsu: Final Fantasy Gaiden.  Rather than keeping the game series as a Gameboy specific spin-off series, Seiken Densetsu 2 was rebuilt from the ground up to run with the “big dogs” on the SNES.  Sadly a little known fact about this game is that the Western release is heavily edited down storyline-wise due to the technical limitations in localizing the game.  Large amounts of text were stripped down to the bare minimum.  Even despite this fact The Secret of Mana is an amazing game and holds a wonderful spot on our list.

 8. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island

Nintendo took a HUGE chance with Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, in that they could have just knocked together another Mario game that took place in the Dinosaur world with similar controls and new power-ups.  Instead Miyamoto decided to make a game with the intention to show a much younger Mario being escorted around by Yoshi as he tries to find baby Luigi.  The game employed very state of the art graphics for the time including sprite scaling, polygons, and morphing; this is all thanks to the FX2 microchip installed.  Yoshi’s Island was actually quite controversial within Nintendo HQ due to its changes to the basic Mario formula, but became quite popular with fans and press alike.

7. Super Mario Kart

One of the very first hit Mario spinoff games, Super Mario Kart put everyone’s favorite mustachioed plumber into the seat of a go-kart.  The game was created to try to push Nintendo into the multiplayer market as Miyamoto wanted two players to interact on the screen at once.  This was in direct contrast to another Nintendo-made racing game, F-Zero, which concentrated on single player.  Mode 7 graphics were utilized heavily to give the game an overwhelmingly 3-D look despite being made with sprites the old-fashioned way.  Many sequels later, nobody can doubt the success of this franchise, and it all started here.

6. Donkey Kong Country

Back in the days when Rare made games for Nintendo, a crazy re-envisionment occurred.  Wanted to work on a big game with Nintendo, the heads of Rare decided to tackle a big property that had fallen by the way-side a bit.  In Donkey Kong Country, no longer was DK and evil girlfriend snatching “King Kong” type monster, but an action man trying to save the bananas he loves.  Donkey Kong Country was made using a new technology called "ACM" (Advanced Computer Modeling).  This new technology gave programmers the option to create games using pre-rendered 3-D backgrounds at a fraction of the usual memory allotment.  If done well all backgrounds and characters would come out looking many leagues above what could normally be created using the systems hardware.  Rare went on to use this method on many of its formidable 16-bit games including Killer Instinct.

5. Chrono Trigger

Hey look another RPG made the grade!  Chrono Trigger was created by Squaresoft to be one of the most spanning and epic games they had ever created.  They gathered up the “cream of the crop” from within the many studios including Akira Toriyama on character design and Hironobu Sakaguchi on production.  Wanting to create a game that had never been seen before, the guys stumbled onto the unique idea to do a game based on time travel, and history was made.  The game follows a rag-tag group of adventurers (all from different times) trying to stop a massive post-apocalyptic future at any means necessary.

4. Super Metroid

What a fitting game to make a list this week as we are currently awaiting Metroid Other M to hit store shelves.  Super Metroid is the third main game in the popular Metroid franchise, and saw a huge increase in narrative and scale never before seen in the series.  Gunpei Yokoi was said to have wanted the game to be similar to the first two games to incite familiarity and to fix things that he felt were incomplete in the first games.  While far more popular in the West than Japan, Super Metroid went on to win over a new generation of gamers with a strong female character.  We can say that Samus is quite possibly the innovator of the archetype in gaming.

3. Final Fantasy 6

No top ten list including SNES games could be complete without mentioning one of the most beloved RPGs of all time.  Final Fantasy 6, called Final Fantasy 3 in the west, was one of the most daring games of its kind, and possibly ever since.  No other game of the time had such a strong grasp on cinematic quality and character development as Final Fantasy 6, as small touches like the music in the game were simply masterpieces.  On a storyline front, many fans will note the overlying darkness in the story being quite different from the somewhat upbeat previous games.  Not only does the main character start out as a bad guy, the world ends in the middle of the game.  No other final Fantasy save number 7 has as much fan love as Final fantasy 6.

2. Super Mario World

Many felt that Super Mario Bros. 3 was a gaming masterpiece, and the best possible Mario game that could be made.  Some would argue that the very next game in the series aped it in every way, and got everything right.  On the surface Super Mario World borrows a lot from Mario 3: the level design, the power-ups, and the villains are similar, but Super Mario World is definitely aided by the power of 16 bit technology.  The game fulfilled a lifelong dream of producer and creator Shigeru Miyamoto in that he always wanted Mario to ride around on a dinosaur, but was unable to do it on past consoles.  What we got was Yoshi, and a legend was born.

1. Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Here we have it, our number one game on the countdown.  Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is a prequel to the original NES Zelda game storyline-wise, but is far more advanced in every way.  Nintendo actually had to bust out a new double density cartridge to handle the epically expansive world and all the storyline, rain effects, and so on.  This is the first game in the series to use some sort of duality system, a trope used in pretty much every other game in the series.  Here we saw use of a Dark world and a Light world, mirrors of each other but fundamentally different.  Since then, we have seen day and Night, Past and Present, and many other similar gimmicks.  Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is still a legendary game despite its age, and that’s why it was voted number one.

Join us next time for a look at Sega’s first handheld gaming machine, the Game Gear!

and while your at it.....

@SHMUPGurus: I totally disagree on the gameplay feeling archaic. All three DKC games have some of the best platforming elements ever. They are all fast paced and the controls are always very tight. There are so many secrets and different places to explore, that I wanted to keep going back after I had beaten it many times. DKC is excellent.

Kulcan (on 01 September 2010)

Kirby SuperStars , Donkey Kong , Killer Instinct , Megaman X <3

SHMUPGurus (on 01 September 2010)

Not a bad list at all. I'd say DK Country is a bit too high though. The gameplay really feels archaic nowadays and IMO, DKC3 had a lot more diversity compared to all the other games. Sure, the characters and animals aren't as lovable, but the whole package was just better.

Serious_frusting (on 01 September 2010)

wha?

the people on this site have a horrible taste in games. Zelda first.

That is the first time i have ever seen that for the SNES.
Chrono trigger is on top most of the time and if not that then mario

morenoingrato (on 01 September 2010)

Chrono Trigger is too low :-(

sauss (on 31 August 2010)

@GooseGaws

Maybe you are right, I haven't played it in over a decade

aGiantSquirrel (on 31 August 2010)

Couldnt agree more. Makes me wish the Nintendo could have as many great games today for the Wii. The Wii has a few, but nothing like the SNES.

GooseGaws (on 31 August 2010)

@rakugakist:

Thank you! Every time these articles come out, I request screenshots. Somebody finally backed me up. :)

Jumpin (on 31 August 2010)

Sorrry to get off topic here, but, I'm a huge Nintendo fan, but I also really liked FF7 and FF8. I wish I could get more into FF9, but even with the FF1 connection, it just didn't interest me as much as 6, 7, and 8.

Soma (on 31 August 2010)

Good list, but I'd put Donkey Kong 2, TMNT IV, Megaman X and Street Fighter 2 over DK, Yoshi Island, Secret of Mana and FFIV

rakugakist (on 31 August 2010)

Ah, my favorite system. Just too many great games for it. I wish you guys would show screenshots instead of the boxes though.

GooseGaws (on 31 August 2010)

@Teo:

That's because FFVII just wasn't that good of a game, especially compared to VI. I think most Nintendo fans who played IX enjoyed it. I don't understand the rest of your comment though; as I recall, no FF title ever made it into the top five of any EGM "best of" list.

Teo (on 31 August 2010)

Nintendo fans despise the Final Fantasy brand after FF7 went to the PS. I remember EGM back then talking about how FF "#" was the best game ever created and zelda was the one behind mario :)

atma998 (on 31 August 2010)

Good list but Super Street Fighter II Turbo should be there...

saicho (on 31 August 2010)

no DQ5 :(

and I loved Super Mario RPG as well. It was a classic.

Hradekal (on 31 August 2010)

My personal favorite SNES game was Super Mario RPG... but this list is just too crowded to add it anywhere I guess.

guiduc (on 31 August 2010)

Good days, huh?

GooseGaws (on 31 August 2010)

@sauss:

That's pretty much the definition of nostalgia. You're remembering how you were blown away in 1994 (I was too), but if you went back and played through it today, it probably wouldn't hold up as well as you think. Again, not a bad game... just overrated. It does have a great soundtrack, though.

gekkokamen (on 31 August 2010)

wow, all these lists from old console games only reflect the lack of knowledge in general from users on this site. Must be an age thing?

Where the F is Mortal Kombat 2 and or Street Fighter 2 Turbo???? both games REDEFINED the 16 bit era, they were great and they were top favorites.

Nothing against Mario or Square, but that's just too much of them in a top 10. I know this was voted on the forums and that's exactly the problem. I don't pretend to change the results but at least I can mention some other well-deserving games so the young and the ignorant can learn a little about the old-school which was definitely not all about Nintendo and Square!

Really missing from this list:

MORTAL KOMBAT 2
STREET FIGHTER 2 TURBO
MEGA MAN X
CASTLEVANIA 4

sauss (on 31 August 2010)

@GooseGaws

This is a personal experience , but I remember in 1994 been blown away by the graphics and soundtrack of DKC the first time I played.

I remmenber a level of a raining jungle. That was incredible to see. that was not nostalgia. (although I gotta say DKC2 is a better game)

GooseGaws (on 31 August 2010)

@Jumpin:

I'm not saying DKC is a bad game, I'm just saying that it's overrated as part of the SNES library. I think nostalgia plays too big a part in its inclusion on lists like these.

Jumpin (on 31 August 2010)

@GooseGaws - Donkey Kong Country also possessed some of the smoothest 2D platforming gameplay in existence. The original was fairly bare bones in comparison to DKC2 and DKC3, but it did win the console war against Sega Genesis based on its merits.

@V-rOck, I agree, Street Fighter 2 Turbo is on my list.

@Anti-RPG people, well; what can I say, I can't really side with that argument because I felt the RPG genre was the strongest on the SNES. Sure it was a good time for other genres too, but I didn't think that any of the other genre's quite shone like RPGs did that generation. I don't even agree with the list, but mine includes a majority of other RPG and adventure titles than those listed in the article.

@ FreeTalkLive, Super Mario All-Star, that game was pure awesomeness, I forgot about it when I made my list. It deserves at least a mention. To this day, I still play Super Mario Brothers 3 on an infrequent basis (maybe once or twice every 4 or 5 months).

dunno001 (on 31 August 2010)

Ah, the golden day of RPGs (and Square), glad to see so many others agree on that. It's the only era where Square's RPGs could hold a fair fight with Nintendo on their own platform and not come out ashamed- they came just shy of Nintendo, 5 to 4. (Donkey Kong Country was Rare.) I'll hazard a guess that on no other system will Square (or Square-Enix) hold 4 slots.

ioi (on 31 August 2010)

@Fernicum - did you actually read the article? "Not only will the list be compiled entirely by you, the fans, but we will go through a large number of game systems all the way back to the 1970’s with the Atari 2600 to modern day." The "team" is you guys, the readers.

Fernicum (on 31 August 2010)

Although it is still a Nintendo game, I'm wondering why Star Fox didn't make the list. If anything this list lacks variety. As one has suggested, the team seem to be biased to RPGs.

Yeah, it is quite an injustice that Street Fighter 2 Turbo didn't make the list. It must be one of the most played games on the SNES. RPGs are mostly played once then shelved.

Fernicum (on 31 August 2010)

Apparently, this top ten is exclusive to Nintendo and Square games.

My theory is most of the team played everything else on their Genesis in the 16bit era and would therefore only remember the games they could only play on the SNES, these being exclusive to the system at that time.

V-r0cK (on 31 August 2010)

Great list, its almost what i wouldve put for my own top 10 games for SNES. However i'd put in Street Fighter 2 Turbo.

Chrizum (on 31 August 2010)

The SNES has too many amazing games to do it justice with a mere top 10 list. A top 25 would be better suited.

mtlca66 (on 31 August 2010)

This list rules. All my favorites, but not in the same order.

elmerion (on 31 August 2010)

The list is ok but... its completely biased by RPG fans.. wtf seriously? Final Fantasy 6 is a great RPG and Chrono Trigger too, but FF4 and Secret of Mana arent nearly as good as other games for example... Street FIghter why isnt Street Fighter 2 here?

cromeros (on 31 August 2010)

I totally disagree... And Super Mario RPG???.... Mega Man X???... The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is a very good game... but... it's not the best of SNES...

Badassbab (on 31 August 2010)

What a totally diiferent list from the MD/Genesis version. It was great to be a gamer in those days.

GooseGaws (on 31 August 2010)

I'll save spdk1 his usual rant of "I didn't choose the games, they were voted on by the MEMBERS OF THE SITE" by saying he didn't choose the games, they were voted on by the members of the site.

@MrT-Tar:

Because Terranigma was never released in North America and didn't sell all that well even where it did come out, it just wouldn't have had enough exposure to make such a list that was voted on by the members of the site.

HexenLord (on 31 August 2010)

I probably wasted 2 years of my life playing Lufia 2. It should have been on here.

westplay (on 31 August 2010)

Megaman X should have been included

Flow (on 31 August 2010)

Great list

I've been thinking for a while, i should buy a Super Nintendo to enjoy some old school gaming

I think this article sealed the deal

Silver-Tiger (on 31 August 2010)

awesome list, I'm playing Chrono Trigger at the moment.

Funny fact: Look at the boxart of Chrono Trigger. Marle uses Lighting magic when her element is actually Ice. Chronos element is Lightning.

darthdevidem01 (on 31 August 2010)

Lies! FF6 deserved to be NUMBER 1!

cgyldn (on 31 August 2010)

Agreed, but Konami is awesome too, super Castlevania 4 is still my favorite snes game.

nintendo_fanboy (on 31 August 2010)

I really have to say that for me, the SNES is the best console ever made. Every single game on this list is great in my opinion, and there are so many others more. Also, amazing genres like JRPG's, platformers and action-adventures had their heydays.

Hephaestos (on 31 August 2010)

I was gonna lash out when I saw mana at 9.... but then you made no wrong picks so... (i'm not a fan of DKC but i know many loved it).

novasonic (on 31 August 2010)

Except for FFIV and Mario Kart, good list.

MrT-Tar (on 31 August 2010)

amazing list, but terranigma should have been on there

Random Person B (on 31 August 2010)

no megaman x?

Simulacrum (on 31 August 2010)

Love your list, but Megaman X2 should be there.

GooseGaws (on 31 August 2010)

Killer Instinct? Better than FFIV?

.........

Michael-5 (on 31 August 2010)

Super Nintendo being my favorite console, I must disagree. How can you miss Super Mario RPG? Your game list looks good, except Final Fantasy IV is nothing special, Killer Instinct and Kirby are probably better choices. My Top 10 would be

1. Super Mario RPG
2. Chrono Trigger
3. Donkey Kong Country
4. Super Mario World
5. Super Mario Kart
6. Final Fantasy VI
7. Super Metroid
8. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to The Past
9. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
10. Donkey Kong Country 2

GooseGaws (on 31 August 2010)

@Jumpin:

So the main reason for a DKC game to be in the top ten is because they used pre-rendered graphics? That just doesn't cut it for me.

Jumpin (on 31 August 2010)

My top 1 would be a little different. It's difficult because there are SO many games for so many different reasons worth consideration (would have loved to put Fire Emblem, Ogre Battle, Tactics Ogre, Castlevania 4, Uncharted Waters 2, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, etc.... on the list); but I limited it to games that I have come back to play in the past couple of years.

1. Terranigma
2. Chrono Trigger
3. Final Fantasy III
4. Earthbound
5. Donkey Kong Country trilogy (they do deserve to be here, they revolutionized the gaming industry by starting the pre-rendered graphics trend -DKC was the first SNES game to use 24-bit colour, and won the Console war).
6. Dragon Quest 5 (not released in the west until DS, but had it been, it would be a contender for a top 3 position).
7. Super Mario RPG
8. Kirby Superstar
9. Street Fighter 2: Turbo
10. Tales of Phantasia (another non-English release, but this game was SO much fun back in the day).

FreeTalkLive (on 31 August 2010)

DKC2 was better than the first one. Also, Super Mario All-Stars was the top SNES game. Just my opinions I guess.

Lastgengamer (on 31 August 2010)

Otherwise a good list though.

Lastgengamer (on 31 August 2010)

I can't believe Earthbound & StarFox were left out. Well I guess many people still haven't played the greatness that is Earthbound.

GooseGaws (on 31 August 2010)

Donkey Kong Country is a Rare game. It's also one of the most overrated SNES games.

Salnax (on 31 August 2010)

Agreed, ten is not enough. Remember Screwattack? They made their first top 20 video just for this system.

Also, wow, that was a great era for JRPGs.

djstrykermx (on 30 August 2010)

I loved the Megaman X series, oh such good memories...

Fededx (on 30 August 2010)

Oh come on! No Star Fox? Are you kidding me? Anyway, 10 is a short number for a console like the SNES

ghost_of_fazz (on 30 August 2010)

Only Nintendo and Square... I like it.

zzamaro (on 30 August 2010)

My TOP SNES games are(no order):

Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island
Super Metroid.

Good top ten.

HabinoBR (on 30 August 2010)

Good list, but only Nintendo and Squaresoft...
How bout Capcom? (cof cof SFII)

curl-6 (on 30 August 2010)

I was beaten to it, but I also find the lack Starfox or Mario RPG disturbing.

sirroman (on 30 August 2010)

No starfox also?

Ten is not enough.

axumblade (on 30 August 2010)

No Super Mario RPG :[ sadness
