Eye of Judgment's Online Servers Shutting Down This September
Imagine you're Sony. You're launching a new Move peripheral by the end of the year that requires the use of a PlayStation Eye camera. You've also already released a game that comes bundled with the Eye in the form of Eye of Judgment, a card/board game that uses the camera in many interesting ways that failed to catch on commercially because it actually requires the Eye. So do you A) relaunch it again now that way more people will have one, and maybe even hint that consumers can get a game with the Eye if they pick up Eye of Judgment, or B) shut down your online servers right before Move launches. Sony is going with option B.
September 30, 2010: Sony is shutting down Eye of Judgment's online servers, joining the ranks of Calling All Cars and every EA game that's over three weeks old. Because PSN doesn't have an all-encompassing server network like Xbox Live, the game companies themselves are in control of when they feel it's no longer financially viable to keep the servers running. Now all those EoJ booster packs are worthless! Worthless, I say! At least there's still the PSP game...
The only good thing to come of this: looks like all the trophies can be acquired offline. That's something, at least! And offline multiplayer still works if you have real-world friends. Still, disappointed baby is disappointed.

well the writter has a point... it's the worst time to decide to close this...
yea, pretty sure EA does it so people buy their new game...regarding this game...who...cares?
damn, I wanted to buy this game! since I have a Cam now! actually never heard in EU of it till recent! hope it gets a new release or something similar
they can just release a sequel that uses the same cards but deeper gameplay style, now that more people getting the Eye, its going to be more popular obviously, its a bad move getting the servers down so soon, should have waited for the sequel atleast.

Champions of Norrath and Champions Return to Arms are among two of the many PS2 games to still have their online servers open.
Servers cost next to nothing to keep open, so it's not whether it's profitable any longer, it's whether the servers are being used(usually.) In EA's case it's due to not being profitable, but they have a contract to close down servers on the XBL as well.
We pay $35-50 a year for XBL when we're using a service that really only costs Microsoft pennies per person.
