The easiest way to explain the situation is to show it. Here's what Kudo Tsunoda, creative director for Kinect at Microsoft, has to say regarding the often difficult task of explaining Kinect in written form:
"I just don't think the games gaming press or core gamers would enjoy all necessarily come down to whether you're shooting something. If you think about a game like Mario Bros., would you say Mario Bros. is a core or casual game? That's exactly what we're doing with the Kinect products. ...But if you look at River Rush, from Kinect Adventures, that in a lot of ways is like a platformer game. It's all the same things you see in platformer games. The way you summed up how you would feel about Mario Bros. is exactly the way we look at the Kinect games. There's the core gaming depth and skills, and the casual approachability that lets you get into it and play it right away. That's what we focus on in all of the gameplay. When we say games are approachable, it doesn't mean shallow. It just means you can get in and experience the game for what it is."

Ok, I'm willing to give Kinect as much innovative credit as is due. Certainly the Eye-Toy has been around for awhile, but Kinect takes it further in terms of accuracy in following movement, and the capabilities for use in menu navigation and voice recognition. All that. But Mario Bros., really?
Super Mario Bros. took the simplistic platforming titles of the Atari and launched them well past what had been done before to solidify the image of a genre, a console, and to plant the springboard off which generations of video gaming would rely. And Tsunoda says that a camera and some river rafting have rivaled all of that.
Alright, Microsoft, come November, let's see what you got.

While he is trying to state that the Kinect games are being made for all players, his analogy skills seem to come straight from the Microsoft PR Department, better known as the home of smoke and mirrors.
Mike from Morgantown
Big words, lol - maybe a little too big. To have that hardcore/casual balance that Mario has (which is what the guy REALLY said) is a tough task.
What a misleading title. Seriously. That's not what he said. At ALL.
Sadly, people won't look past the title.
It's like some of the people here didn't really understand what he said. He was just explaining the approach they are taking with Kinect is similar to what Nintendo has done with Mario.
Trying to compare ANYTHING with Mario Bros its suicide, Kinect completely and utterly fails by comparison, nice try though
@ hunter_alien
Well put. I think any core experience is marked by being able to at least control your character, i.e. walking/running, through levels or worlds. He is right about Mario, though. Many can pick it up, but only those who are core gamers or have had a lot of experince with it can master. Beating levels without not only losing lives, but also without getting hit. But sorry, no game for Kinect screams "core game" to me.
Well, he had good intentions, but he just picked the wrong game IP to associate it with. But, to be fair, what other IP is recognizable by just about anyone and could convey the same message he was trying to say?
He was just saying that they are developing Kinect games by trying to include everyone.
I get the philosophy. I question the execution and market impact. But, I get what he was saying about their intent in making KJinect games.
First the Star Wars fake video and then this guy ...
Kinect is doom, Kinect is ridiculous
wow thats funny but never compare kinect to mario bros.U can compare it to wii sports or even mario party but this far to low to compare it to one of the most revolutionary game in the history of video games.
So Microsoft compliments Nintendo and people see this as a bad thing? All that is being said is that anyone can pick up Kinect and start playing but there is depth in the gameplay that will cater more to a traditional gamer.
Now, Siko....i dont do this, but when you insult people and call them dumb, at least use proper conjugation......what youre going for here is "....ARE so fucking dumb"
Anyways, he says "...the way you summed up how you feel about Mario Brothers, that is EXACTLY the way we look at Kinect" Soooooo he even uses the word exactly when saying what Kinect will do for consumers or the industry.
Sounds like Microsoft saying Kinect feels like MArio.
about 90% of the people in the comment section is so fucking dumb lol
Read dumb arses lol
"If you think about a game like Mario Bros., would you say Mario Bros. is a core or casual game? That's exactly what we're doing with the Kinect products"
Ha are you guys even able to read because I havnt a clue where you are getting that he said Kinect = Mario in terms of impact, all he says is that when developing games for Kinect they develop them so that thay cater for all audiences, so instead of just coming on anything to do with Kinect and ranting fanboy bullshit why dont you read the fucking article properly and you might just realise that he was complementing Mario you arrogant arseholes.
iasta wrote: "What's funny is that in his statement he describe well nintendo approach on video games and "bridge" title, solid nice gameplay that is easy to pick up but hard to master."
^this, 100%
Too bad that Kinekt has all the chance to be forgotten in matter of months, while Mario is here for ~ 30 years...
What's funny is that in his statement he describe well nintendo approach on video games and "bridge" title, solid nice gameplay that is easy to pick up but hard to master.
Just Kinect is hardware and Mario is software, the "revolution" will depend of the software, the associated games not the hardware (sorry for the joke).
WTF is he for real? Comparing Mario to a frigging river rafting game. I think he needs to quit smoking that stuff.
You ever wonder what the most ridiculous, arrogant, and stupid thing you can say about your upcoming product is?
BAM, there it is!
Dang Microsoft Kinect is nowhere near Mario's league. Comparing it to Mario is just stupid thats like comparing President Obama to Jesus Christ.
If anyone here has seen the movie, Get Him to the Greek, then you will understand the reference.
"When people look back at musical history they will say Sergeant Pepper, African Child. That's what they will probably say."
Let me fix that to fit this article.
"When people look back at video game history they will say Mario Bros., Microsoft Kinect. That's what they will probably say."
