Miyamoto Confirms: Nintendo Working on New Hardware
The rumors from last week were now confirmed to be true, though in a brief mention, by Shigeru Miyamoto at the Annual Japan Media Arts Festival this Saturday.
Now the only thing left is figuring out what it is, and the speculation revolves around the Wii HD and a Nintendo DS with motion sensor and HD graphics, which was rumored last week, but promptly denied by Iwata a few days later.

Shigeru Miyamoto talked a lot in this Arts Festival, in fact. He talked about his story as a game developer, the hard times Nintendo had to endure, revealed that the inspiration for Super Mario Galaxy came from a Hamster he was caring for at his house, that he will refrain from making online multiplayer games for a while, and that Nintendo is working on one or more titles for WiiMotion Plus.
We now have the confirmation that they are indeed working on new hardware, but i wonder if it's going to be announced at this year's Game Developers Conference, as rumored. For now, we can only speculate.

Yet it has more exclusives than the other systems, and sells more games in general...
A new system is no surprise. The Wii gets skipped for 90%+ of all multi-console releases because of how far behind it is in terms of hardware.
I Honestly think that whatever it is that they release it will be a success, Nintendo is got by far the most loyal fanbase and a new generation of kids love mario already, wait till they play as link. eventhough I barely play my Wii I will buy whatever they release, what can I say I love Nintendo.

This is news? They're always working on hardware.

I agree.But who's Iwata and who's Miyamoto ?Which lead Nintendo ?
Hopefully they get the brilliant idea to add a Hard Disk for dlc... As for DS2, I don't care about handhelds so the new hardware better be a console.

Finally someone puts a source instead of trolling and yapping....Was enough to convince me. I believe it is the new Ds2.
Several notes:
Xbox 360 has Ps3 on a choke-hold
Nintendo Ds has PSP on a choke-hold.
It will probably be the new DS, they probably want it out before sony PSP2.

Well obviously there working on a new console for the nex gen. It takes several years to develop a console. I'm sure Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo have been working on a new console for at least a year now.
DarkisWR, HD console, there's no such console, there's Xbox360 and Ps3, and Wii is beating both
personally, i'm happier than ever with Wii games i have right now, and until RedStell 2 and Monster Hunter 3 come out, just finished NewvMario Bros. Wii, and i still have to play Rabbits Go Home, No More Heroes 2, Pikmin2, Tastuno VS Capcom, Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare, Little King's Story and Final Fantasy Crystal Bearers
Wii is not dying any time soon.... and using the logic, the new hardware is Ds2, where Ds is 5 years old, gets less and less 3rd party support, has very outdated graphics, and it's time for a serious upgrade, although there are still great games to be done on Ds
I was typing out this long ass comment that went into detail on why he might state something that appears to be obvious, but i doubt people would read it, and it just seemed too long. The main point i would be trying to get across is that yeah his statements seem pointless if you take them out of context, but there are obvious reasons why he said the things he said.
This is edited from this point.
I realized my comment didn't have much content in it, so i'm going to add a little to it.
One of the main points (in my opinion) is for the investors/stock holders, and one can expand off this idea.
Wow! What is this, a kind of birdbrained news.
Yes Nintendo ist working always on new hardware. Volkswagen is always working on new cars.
If they weren't working on new hardware I'd assume they were getting out of the business permanently. They start work on the next version just about as soon as the current one is finished. It's not like they tell their R&D guys "thanks, great work, see you in a few years." Those hardware engineers work year-round every year just like the rest of us. Work doesn't stop on the next console until Nintendo doesn't have enough money to continue.

If Sony and Microsoft powning Nintendo lol why follow what Nintendo doing?

More HD consoles than wii?....can you explain because I think Wii has sold 67 million consoles.....xbox 360 30 something same with Ps3.....
DarkisWR says:"more software on those hd shankers as well." -actually thats false.
lol Actually there are more software on Wii's look at the front page on Vgchartz. The article that contained the interview with Iwata, included graphs comparing the software's each console contained.
Wii has more software on their platform. However, plenty of people accuse the wii console of having many shovel-wares.
@DarkisWR - I see what your saying dude but Nintendo is really killing this generation. We can hate the system and the games but Nintendo is actually doing a great job business wise than Sony or Microsoft. They literally made both companies change their whole business schemata. Microsoft wouldn't even think NATAL had Nintendo not been successful with the Wii.
KeptoKnight says:
ok, ok, ok, enough is enough. This conversation ends right here. We dont care what you guys think Nintendo should do. All we know is that they are powning everybody asses here, and we wait for their other 2 Major console to shank again....THE END
Wrong.
HD consoles are pwning..theres more hd consoles than wii's...more software on those hd shankers aswell.
Software devs are running from the wii period...sure nins 1st party stuff sales..only cuz of the name.
Baph77737 says:: "Awesome! Keeping fingers crossed that it's Super Wii"
Wow thats actually a nice name to put it as....Super Wii =)
Iwata denied a WiiHD.
What does that have to do with this?
Nintendo is ALWAYS working on new hardware. They have a hardware R&D department. What would that department be doing if not work on new hardware?
Every five years it's the same circus...
Awesome! Keeping fingers crossed that it's Super Wii and that it will get all the big time games the Wii doesn't + have versions of exclusives that look every bit as good or even better than big time exclusives on PS3 and 360. :)
Ok. I simply cannot wrap the Wii HD idea around my mind. I just don't think Nintendo would pass that off as being the next video game console. It doesn't seem like Nintendo to release a system that just doesn't innovate. And the Wii HD is nothing more than the same exact system with some better graphics, and only if your TV supports it (most do). But, I am a firm believer that a DS with motion sensitivity (along with some apparently bonus HD visuals) is very innovative, and, based on the success of the Wii, would be a logical step for Nintendo to make.
Yeah, not quite 90 : 10 haha, but it hasn't been quite as balanced the last couple of years as before, definitelyly. However, 2010 is gearing up to be one of the best years for Nintendo consoles in recent memory, imo, especially if you love gaming.
ok, ok, ok, enough is enough. This conversation ends right here. We dont care what you guys think Nintendo should do. All we know is that they are powning everybody asses here, and we wait for their other 2 Major console to shank again....THE END.
Guys, thanks for the conversation. I don't mean to keep arguing. I'll be first in line to buy the next Nintendo system if I can see traditional controls and more hardcore games.
But Mr. Nice, right now the balance from Nintendo is more like 90 percent games for all types of people and 10 percent gamer games. Do you not see what I'm saying?
Agreed JPL78, and archbrix. I also forgot about that DKC remark - but I think he later apologized didn't he? I love that series more than many Mario games...
JPL78: Oh man, I have to admit I totally forgot about that Donkey Kong Country/Rare remark. And from what I understand he said it right in front of the guy from Rare, no less... ouch! That did seem very out of character for him. And I do completely disagree with his remark, as I loved DKC (the first one, anyway).
Reggie, though... I think his arrogance is just part of his charm, maybe? Seriously though, he did admit in an interview that Bioshock was an incredible game when it debuted on 360 (then again, who wouldn't?).
I hope, REALLY hope, they won't mess with the new system. I mean... Kick the friend code please. Put in it a DVD player and nothing else. No photos, no meteo, no Miis. Just good games. BUNCH of good games, damn. Bunch of downloadable content.
Nope, I don't want to have to look that up. I just remember reading he said that, and considering he barely plays any games, I'm guessing it'd be hard to find. But that's not to say he doesn't like them. He just doesn't often take inspiration from them.
And no, because you play games more than most doesn't mean that he should always pander to you and not create games that are accessible to all types of gamers. Like archbrix said, that's what allowed Nintendo to stay afloat all of these years. There is a difference between gamers who play a lot and gamers who play like your dad, but that doesn't mean that games like Wii Sports and Wii Fit can't be appreciated by both types of gamers. Are people that playa lot of games less likely to play Wii Sports? Yeah, but how often is that because they won't give them a chance or fear it's not "cool" enough or "serious" enough?
And I'm all for bringing in new gamers as well as catering to longtime gamers, and will agree Nintendo often times doesn't do enough to keep that balance. But I am more than happy they're attempting to make gaming more than a niche hobby.
archbrix, alright, color me corrected. I hadn't read those comments. What soured me was an old statement he made about Donkey Kong Country and Rare, something like this proves Americans will play a crappy game as long as it has good graphics. Because we all know Donkey Kong Country isn't better than Donkey Kong 3... Way to insult the company (and an entire country) who would go on to help make the N64 what it was. But nothing I had ever heard after that helped my opinion of him.
But I'll lay off because as just proven I haven't seen everything he has ever said. But humble is not a word I would ever use for Shig. Humble acting maybe, as most Japanese people are, but his words never come across that way to me. And don't get me started on Reggie! :P
JPL78 says:
I don't like him because every single thing I've ever read from him is arrogant and out of touch with gamers.
Actually, Miyamoto is usually quite humble in his remarks. He has admitted in the past that he himself doesn't play other developer's games much at all, and therefore isn't quick to criticize them. As far as praising other game developers, he has stated that he was impressed by Sega's Seaman and Samba De Amigo and also, aside from it's content, praised Grand Theft Auto for it's open-world game design. Even in this past speech, when asked why NSMB Wii wasn't online capable he admitted, "There are probably many others who could make it better than us." The only response of his that admittedly did sound a bit arrogant was when he said, "I could have made Halo, but chose not to.", but I think he only meant that it's not the kind of game Nintendo generally makes.
I totally agree that things like Wii Sports and Brain Training feel a bit like novelties and I really wish Nintendo focused on more games with beautiful gameplay like Mario and genius design like Zelda, but the wide-spread appeal of their diverse library has allowed them to persevere for almost three decades now; something no other game/hardware developer can boast, and Miyamoto was and still is a big part of that.
I want the next Nintendo Home console to come out in 2015 and the next Nintendo handheld to come out in Summer 2010 in Japan and Late 2010 in Others and America. Hopefully this is the D.S 2. Also about the Motion Plus games I think it is:
Zelda Wii(2)
Pikmin 3
Mario Party 9
Mr. Nice, did he? So he praised a DS exclusive. Can you find me a game on a competing system, or a multiplatform game he praised?
And I stand by what I said that Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Nintendogs and Brain Age aren't going to appeal the average serious gamer.
And don't mock the word serious, and start that whole thing up. I play games everyday for several hours a day, my dad plays Tiger Woods on Wii once every couple months for a hour. See the difference? Stop acting like its snooty or wrong to notice there is a difference. Because once this industry is completely causualized then the people like me, and 95 percent of the rest of the people on this site might not buy into it anymore.
I apologize to everyone for bringing Nintendo "trolling" here if that is the case. I just hate the idea of a motion controlled, HD DS. And as a counterpoint I LOVE my current DS (best RPG handheld EVER) and I do still like Nintendo. I've owned every Nintendo system to be released, virtua boy aside and I do support them. But I don't support tossing life long gamer's tastes aside so we can bring in people who don't game. And because of that, Zelda and Metroid aside, Nintendo doesn't give me a whole lot to love now days.
@ JPL78 - No, he's given credit to other games/developers before, including Level 5 and the Professor Layton series. So what if he barely plays games, he does so all day at his job anyway. And his games don't cater enough to the "serious gamer"? That just ridiculous. They don't appeal enough to the online FPS fanatic, true. While I'm sure we'd all be interested in seeing what he'd be able to do in the online gaming spectrum, I'm more than happy that he's able to appeal to a wide variety of people than just "serious gamers".
OMG, they're developing NEW hardware......what the hell...that's obvious, that's what all companies do, of course Nintendo's been researching and trying to develop the next console, it's not like they stop when they get a new product out, it's a continuous thing.
RubangB, I don't like him because every single thing I've ever read from him is arrogant and out of touch with gamers. Even so far that you will notice he has never given props to any single developer or game that is not his own. Not once in 30 years has he praised anyone but himself. At this point I don't think he even plays games except for the ones he makes, and in turn you kind of see that in his mentality that he only sees his own games as important.
I won't argue the importance of the games you listed, but they are all important for one main reason, they appeal to non-gamers and sell a zillion copies. I myself have played Wii Sports and Brain Training, and both are more like novelties to pick up once in a while. Also not a single game on that list, Mario aside, should appeal heavily to serious gamers.
If it was 1986 and I was playing my shinny golden copy of Zelda I might praise him too. But its not and so I won't.

This is a no-brainer, Nintendo already announced that when the Wii came out. Their strategy is once a new console comes out they're already making plans for the next one.
Wow all this Miyamoto-trolling is hilarious. Every developer in the world wishes they could have predicted the success of Wii Sports, Nintendogs, Brain Training, Wii Fit, Wii Sports Resort, or New Super Mario Bros. Wii. It's okay not to enjoy all these games. But don't let his success make you cry bro.
Cool, as long as they don't release it until 2011 at the very earliest.
Of course Nintendo is working on new hardware. That's how the industry works: finish one console, start the next. This has no bearing on when the successor will be released, because the point is to be ready, not to rush things as soon as they come out.
The successors to the Wii and DS are years away at the absolute earliest. There is no need for them now. They will remain in the background until the time comes.
How is this news. Ever since the N64, they've told us that every single platform (console and handheld) starts R&D development right after the new one comes out. And the SNES was years in the making as well.
In short, Nintendo has been working on both the successor to the DS and Wii for years, probably since the Wii and DS came out or before.
@JPL78 wouldnt it be more acurate to call it gamecube 2.0? :)
- But seriously, if it is hardware, as in a gaming system, then my bet would be DS 2. Otherwise it will be some new hardware that we cant think of, like, the new Wii Hat (thats the best I could come up with that wasn't a vitality sensor, or Balance Board)
WHY SO SERIOUS? ment no harm here, just first time chatting in vgch charts cut me some slack here
ok, everyone knows that nintendo is working on new hardware...what we want to know is if this new hardware is going to be announced at gdc
Can we not have motion controls on a handheld please?
And for Wii HD, would that be considered Wii 1.5? (jab at people calling the 360 the Xbox 1.5)
I'm glad Shiggy isn't planning on doing any online games, that might actually take some creativity on his part. It's much easier to just sign off on another Zelda or Mario game. I mean, who's actually stupid enough to think gamers don't want online games... oh wait, nevermind.
I'm sorry, N fans. Don't mean to be so anti Shiggy. The man has done amazing things for the industry, 20 years ago. Now days I think he's much less relevant than somepeople think. And he comes accross as some sort of idiot savant staring at a hamster cage going, now that could go in the next Mario game! After that comes the mindblowing advancement that more than one person could actually play a platforming game at the same time. That was his "masterpiece" by the way. Just look up the definition of "masterpiece" and then watch New Super Mario Brothers, or compare Miyamoto to Da Vinci and then we'll talk.
sorry i am in here with a bunch of nerds who got nothing better to do, never have been to collage but i promise you i have more money in my savings than you will see in a lifetime so who needs to figure it out here
EVERYONE! Ignore 2zosteven. Anyone who claims Mario games have sloppy controls is clearly not right in their mind.
Also, yes, Halo probably costs a whole lot more to make than Mario. But the latest Mario game outsold Halo 3 in a matter of weeks. Now who's smart?
2zosteven : What? Nintendo should make a console so people don't have to buy it, and they would make less money? How does that make any sense???
"halo by a long shot"
Because you say so, I guess.

Nintendo has CONTINUOUSLY stated they are targeting variety kinds of audience...I wonder and ask myself if people read into articles, blogs or.....
What is interesting, this is from personal experience. I have the 3 consoles, interesting however, most of the females that entered my room pretty much ignore the xbox 360, and Ps3, the Wii has been flawless attracting my female friends. Aside from my female friends, during any kinds of parties the Wii gets used the most. In all honesty :)
mario has slopy control imagine mario on the ps3 would graphics be better?
"with real contol and graphics"
I'm not entirely sure what that means... Apparently no console before 360 or PS3 had real graphics since real must equal HD. Real control must be limited to only button presses too. Glad we got that cleared up.
no just a quality differance come on here, look at the diferance between mario and halo which one costs more to make?
@ 2zosteven,
So because 10-20 million people love the games that you don't like, you consider them "half-assed"? Are you shallow-minded or what?
Nintendo have always made real consoles, and what half assed games would those be? I suppose you mean wii sports and wii sports resort, but they aren't half assed, millions of people enjoy them and that's all that matters.

"This story is stupid. Everyone knows Nintendo is working on new hardware. They get started on new hardware as soon as the last box is out the door. This is no confirmation of a Wii HD or anything, just confirmation that they've begun work on their eigth generation box and nothing more."
I dont think the theme of the article is about the working of the console.
I think the main theme of the article and the prior rumors and speculation is that Nintendo next hardware console is coming sooner than one expects....
Supposely because:
"The current Wii hardware is based upon processors and graphics technology supplied by IBM and AMD." -
"The joint development agreement between IBM and AMD expires on December 31, 2011 but “may be extended further by the mutual agreement of the parties.”" -
So in other words it is up to Nintendo to continue the contract or not.
But this is what i think, i can be totally wrong which is ok to me lol.
"Nintendo working on new hardware" is never a rumor because it's always true. What said hardware is and when (if) it gets released is the question.
The actual rumor is the unsupported claim that Nintendo is debuting new hardware at GDC and that Ubisoft/THQ/whoever is on board o somehow involved.
@kenology: you are right on the money... although it is fun to speculate on a week by week or month by month. for anyone to think that Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony don' start the plans for a new console at launch or even before the launch of it's current console is just plain dumb and naive
Well it is hard to imagine it could be anything with DS. I mean unless DSi XL is only to be seen as a special edition/limited edition, announcing something that would potentially compete with that is silly.
Therefore it woud probably have to do something with Wii or the next Nintendo console/nintendo handheld. But for the same reasons as another DS model, it wouldl be hard to think they would show off the next generation handheld so soon to the DSi XL. Really only thing I could understand is another "hardware peripheral" such as the Wii Balance Board, or N6.
This story is stupid. Everyone knows Nintendo is working on new hardware. They get started on new hardware as soon as the last box is out the door. This is no confirmation of a Wii HD or anything, just confirmation that they've begun work on their eigth generation box and nothing more.
Not strange, Nintendo is always working on new hardware but they won't release new hardware until they are on the verge of losing their grip and/or a new dangerous competitor arrives.
At this point of the year, they are pretty much safe.
Could be DS2. Original DS is pretty old and it is pretty much saturated in Japan. They are just upgrading to new models. Launching it by end of this year in Japan and next year in western world sounds realistic.
They should have been working on this shortly after the Wii was launched, which I'm sure they have. The real question is what exactly is it, Wii successor or DS successor? Now me personally, am not ready for a Super Wii or Wii HD, not just yet. I also believe the Wii is doing too good to replace it just yet. You can probably expect a Wii's successor in 2015, unless the console suddenly starts doing terrible all of a sudden, expect it early. These reasons make me believe if any successor is going to be revealed, it's the DS's successor. I also believe it's launch games could possibly be the 5th gen Pokemon games. Now, some believe it's the Vitality Sensor, I actually see that if it's not a successor at all. I'm just confused about it being considered 'hardware' or 'add-on'. When will they release new hardware? My guess, late 2010 in Japan.
yay for always working on hardware. It allows you to hype up the media every other week :-P
This is vague to the point of meaninglessness. Nintendo are always working on new hardware. If we get exactly what he said, then we can say whether he meant there's a new console coming up shortly or not.
Um... anyone who doesn't already know this... where is the rock you crawled out from? Of course Nintendo is working on their next console, as is Microsoft and Sony. They all went to work right after PS3, 360, and Wii were released. It's just how the industry works and has worked all along. This is like confirming Warner Bros has a new movie in production or something.
It is likely the next home console. From early dev, systems take 3-4 years, which would put it for a release in 2012-2013, which makes sense, thatd be 6-7 years from the wii release.
better not be the next nintendo home console, the wii hasn't finished its destiny lol
It is going to be a new DS since they already denied a Wii HD. And it's coming with a Nvidia Ion chipset, powerfull but very power efficient. Saw a netbook with one and it can play games like MW2 with easy on a small screen(lower resolution).
The funnie thing is, DS2 is probably going to be more powerfull than the Wii haha.
Surely they're working on it after 2007, but the fact that Miyamoto said this could only mean announcements at GDC or E3...
Couldn't this just be the Vitality Sensor or something similar? An add-on of some kind? I mean that's hardware too, isn't it?
Also, there's no way DS2 or whatever it'll be called will have HD graphics. In his comments, Iwata mentioned 'high resolution' graphics, not high *definition*. What would the point of HD be on such small screens anyway? XD
But that is obvious: both Nintendo and Sony already stated once that when a new console is launched on the market, the company is already developing the following one. No one should really care when they say they're working on a new console, just that, when they say this, it means there's an year or two until release.
Yeah of course they are 'working on' new hardware but the question is when are they releasing new hardware. Either way it won't be until 2011 that we see what ever it is they announce ;)
They admitted to be working on new hardware the month after the Wii was released. Any good company never stops... There is no news until they stop working on new hardware, because that means they are getting ready to have manufacturers start producing it.
A company that makes consoles and video games was confirmed to be working on one of the two, stay tuned for more socking revelations.
Either way it should be exciting, and if they do announce it at GDC, I will expect more details at E3.
