Wii Exclusive "The Grinder" Goes Multiplatform!

Wow, now this is a shocker.

Remember Wii-exclusive monster/zombie shooter with co-op, The Grinder (Left 4 Dead Wii, if you will)? I'm sure the Wii owners do, at least.

Well, now PS3, 360, and PC owners should get acquainted with it - according to IGN's exclusive interview with High Voltage Software president Kerry Ganofsky and chief creative officer Eric Nofsinger, The Grinder will be giving a taste of good ol' western hell to the owners of these platforms as well... when prompted to answer whether "The Grinder" is still a Wii exclusive game, their response was clear as day.

IGN: Is the plan still to keep Grinder a Wii exclusive?

Kerry: Our secret is out! Grinder is no longer a Wii exclusive. We plan to ship on Xbox 360, Sony PS3, and PC as well.

This surely comes as a surprise - HVS was very proud to be pushing the envelope with their Wii exclusives (do you remember The Conduit's graphics hype and showcase trailers? I sure do!), but now they seem to deviate from being "Wii-only" developers. I can tell you that I honestly did not see this coming, and you probably didn't either... most of you, at least.

Along with these news, IGN also released a new trailer:

Source: IGN (You can read the whole interview here - it contains lots of info on the game and how HVS are faring in development, along with some game art).

So one of the games I was looking forward to gets pushed back until 2011 and it will get a crummy port on the wii, no thanks, I'll stick to Left 4 dead

dib8rman (on 05 February 2010)

YES!

lol now when it fails people can't say "Hardcore games don't sell on Wii." Instead they would see that the dev's really are terrible.

blunty51 (on 05 February 2010)

So much for supporting the 'little' dev that's making an effort to make decent games in genres that are lacking in the particular system. I would have bought this for the specific effort they were making for the Wii (where it needs a game where the console is its specific focus), but now it's just another blah. I'll just get L4D for PC (from a proven developer).

FreeTalkLive (on 05 February 2010)

This is great news. Now the game may be better but I certainly expect better ads. If the game is actually decent, the Wii version may sell even more copies now.

BigD3FW (on 05 February 2010)

I was mad to hear it going multiplatform because the Wii needs more exclusive FPS games. But when I saw that it wasn't coming out until Halloween 2011, it just doesn't seem that interesting anymore.

kazadoom (on 05 February 2010)

I have now lost all interest in this game. I think it will bomb, very dumb move by HVS!!

nintendonitis (on 05 February 2010)

Like the Nintendo Empire will give a damn!

haxxiy (on 05 February 2010)

lol, one of the most waited Wii titles suddenly become uninteresting and bland. You're awesome, guys.

megaman79 (on 05 February 2010)

Can't believe the f----ing delay. Still, Gladiator AD turning into shit was much worse news.

Faxanadu (on 05 February 2010)

Will be interesting to see if they can also have good technology on the HD systems. Otherwise, nice to hear that everyone will be able to play (enjoy?) the game.

cr00mz (on 05 February 2010)

this game sounds like a poor mans Left 4 Dead, and now that it isnt wii exclusive anymore i have no interest in it. Might try it for the PC, but that's it...TRY IT dont think this game will hold a candle to left 4 dead 2

thismeintiel (on 05 February 2010)

I'm going to have to guess that this will sell better on the Wii and PS3, as they don't have Left for Dead. Also, if it's coming out in 2011, then they'll probably use the PS Arc as an option for control.

Smeags (on 05 February 2010)

I saw Halloween and got all excited, and then I saw 2011...

Boo!

Innervate (on 05 February 2010)

@ClaudeLv250

I believe it's clear what is happening. Sega is the cause of these rash new direction.

bmmb1 (on 05 February 2010)

As to "Wii is the only reason The Conduit failed" - that was sarcasm, right? The Conduit would have sold even less on the HD consoles, read the reviews...

bmmb1 (on 05 February 2010)

I'm fine with that. Only thing I am pissed about is that the probably crappy Gladiator AD isn't coming to HD, and so will be used as another example of "hardcore doesn't sell on the Wii" even though the reasons it will flop have absolutely nothing to do with the Wii.

mrryu7 (on 05 February 2010)

Looks promising, but I have to admit that I question the move...Call of Duty 110 will be out then, in addition to Gears of War 3 and whatever every-other-year shooter comes down the line...this game will almost certainly get lost in the shuffle on the HD systems, while Wii owners may lose interest, one year later.

blizzid (on 04 February 2010)

This was never going to sell great, but as long as it was a Wii exclusive it would at least get some attention from Nintendo fans. Now that it's multiplatform, everyone will just ignore it.

couchmonkey (on 04 February 2010)

I look forward to this selling 3 times as much on the HD systems since Wii is the only reason the Conduit was a failure.

Gamerace (on 04 February 2010)

Guess they weren't too happy with Conduit sales. Not a big gain for HD owners but at least Wii is still getting get.

sjhillsa (on 04 February 2010)

@OkeyDokey - Agreed. One word, Mediocrity

--OkeyDokey-- (on 04 February 2010)

Meh. Not a big loss for Wii owners and not a big score for anyone else.

loves2splooge (on 04 February 2010)

Great for me I guess (since I don't have a Wii but I've been planning to get one anyway). But honestly this should be a Wii exclusive. FPS are a dime a dozen on Ps360. I don't think the Wii-Mote + Nunchuk setup is ideal for a FPS (just because the Wiimote can function as a light gun doesn't mean that it's suited for a 'core' shooter. Shooters are about more than just aiming, shooting and strafing) unless its a on-rails light gun shooter but the Classic Controller Pro is coming and that's pretty similar to the Dualshock so that would be adequate for a FPS.

forest-spirit (on 04 February 2010)

As long as it's still coming to the Wii I see no problem here.

Pure (on 04 February 2010)

IMO, they shouldn't bother with a 360 or PC release. They already have L4D.

Bobbuffalo (on 04 February 2010)

Why not? Don't forget that this game started in the wii so the HD versions will be the ports instead of backwards, making the versions with the same quality..

..but this game will be severly overlooked in the HD consoles..and why Halloween 2011?! That's too much!

@Claudel - I think that SEGA has something to do with it.

ClaudeLv250 (on 04 February 2010)

I wonder what's happening at High Voltage. First Gladiator AD gets watered down and now their Wii graphical showcase goes multiplatform.

Netyaroze (on 04 February 2010)

@menx64.

If your comments is to graphics then ofcourse HD consoles wll be far superior. But Wii is not about graphics its about controls. And Wii wont get a port they will redesign the whole game for Wii. Which Engine runs on Wii and on HD consoles aswell ? I mean which engine pushes HD consoles and runs on wii aswell ? Obviously every wii engine could run potentialy on the HD consoles. Wii gets as always a completly different game. So you shouldn be afraid. They can put more effort in the WII version because its less time consuming to programm for Wii.

DOLBYdigital (on 04 February 2010)

Interesting and unexpected.
I don't care as long as they don't gimp development for any of the platforms. Make the game use the strengths of each platform and I will probably get the game for more than one (wii and pc). However if they do what most multiplat devs do then I probably won't be getting this game for ANY platform.

I'll keep an open mind since this is their first multiplat attempt and maybe, just maybe, they will be smart and focus on each version as its own. If they do then it will sell well (especially on wii and ps3 since they don't have L4D)

oni-link (on 04 February 2010)

...also Halloween 2011 is way too long for a game that should be almost done on the Wii!!! HVS should just release the Wii version on Halloween 2010 and then follow up with the HD releases in 2011. That way they would have the name already out there if it is a quality product and would result in better than Wii sales for the HD twins!!!

Barozi (on 04 February 2010)

Quite surprising if you ask me.
Didn't know it will feature co-op.

oni-link (on 04 February 2010)

@Mendoza

Why the gfx engine in ghostbusters were horrid for their respective systems. HVS may not be the best developer out there but they have a pretty competent gfx engine called Quantum!!! If they actually licensed it to a couple of Wii developers, those developers won't have games that look like crap on the Wii. Honestly, The Conduit was very competent in the gfx department!!!

richardhutnik (on 04 February 2010)

Well, I hope it is good enough that PS3 owners won't have to keep thinking about Left 4 Dead.

milkyjoe (on 04 February 2010)

People who don't own a Wii are in for a treat, these guys are really talented developers who make brillia....

Yeah, I can't even finish that sentence...

Mendoza85 (on 04 February 2010)

I Remember when HVS buy the graphics engine from the developers of ghostbusters, a couples of months ago.... now I see it.... BRAVO HVS!! You're working on the mayor leagues!

ph4nt (on 04 February 2010)

I am very interested to see the sales breakdown for this game when all is said and done.

aragod (on 04 February 2010)

I'm still waiting to see one decent title from HVS, I couldn't care less if they keep their Grinder on the Wii or not, seriously, that game has 0 chance to sell on HD twins.

oni-link (on 04 February 2010)

Matters little to me as the Wii has always and will be about Nintendo games. Third party games just don't cut it compared to Nintendo published titles on the Wii. Of course there are a few exeptions like: Muramasa, TvC, LKS, etc.

Avarice28 (on 04 February 2010)

I thought the conduit made a profit? Why are they porting this game over to the HD twins? I am guessing that it will be a "straight" port and will look the same on all consoles.

Kennyheart (on 04 February 2010)

After the sales of the conduit I CANT GUESS why they would do this. (Sarcasm)

The Ghost of RubangB (on 04 February 2010)

This isn't the first time. No More Heroes is getting ported to the HD consoles. The first Rayman Raving Rabbids was even ported from Wii to 360.

Weird though. I thought this was supposed to be the exclusive Wii answer to Left 4 Dead.

De85 (on 04 February 2010)

Considering how sales of The Conduit ended up it's not surprising that they would want to expand their potential market.

Tayne (on 04 February 2010)

HVS is just going buckwild with the money they're getting for developing Iron Man 2 (Wii). It'll be interesting to see how this turns out. Good luck HVS.

menx64 (on 04 February 2010)

Well, after this the grinder is out of mi list... Why?... Simply wii is going to get a bad port as it always do... .

Xen (on 04 February 2010)

"The trend continues"? So, if you count EA Sports active, this is not the first time?

Pretendo (on 04 February 2010)

Halloween 2011?!?!

Carl2291 (on 04 February 2010)

Great to see 3rd parties giving PS3 and 360 a chance!

Train wreck (on 04 February 2010)

The trend continues I see.

alfredofroylan (on 04 February 2010)

So the guys from "The Conduit" are now working on Ps3 and XBOX360?? Well I guess it's time to run to the hills

wiisley64 (on 04 February 2010)

I'm not that surprised given how well wii core third party games have been doing lately.

Nintendogamer (on 04 February 2010)

I do not understand the word 'deelopers'?

homer (on 04 February 2010)

Shocking.
