Xbox 360 Version of Final Fantasy XIII to Come on 3 Discs

After much mocking from the internet, it's now oficially confirmed that the Xbox 360 version of Final Fanasy XIII will come on 3 discs.

After being listed on Gamefly yesterday that it would come on 3 discs, Square Enix finally confirmed the fact. It has been known for quite some time that Square Enix was aiming for 3 discs, but just now it's confirmed they achieved their objective.

This fact was being predicted by the internet since before the Xbox 360 version of Final Fantasy XIII was unveiled, as seen by the picure above. The consequences of having multiple discs? “Players will only have to swap discs twice during their entire game,”. Will Microsoft regret the decision of keeping the Xbox 360 DVD-bound, or are people just bullying Microsoft?

Final Fantasy XIII will come to the west for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 this March 9.

Reminds me of the good old days of Final Fantasy VII. Nothing wrong with swapping discs IMO.

Nintendology (on 02 February 2010)

This is not a disc issue. It is a content issue. High resolution models, high resolution textures. Unless Square becomes as crafty as say...Factor 5, they probably won't implement compression and decompression tools (or have they already done so and 3 discs is after the fact?).

Honestly, if they simply modified the Final Fantasy XII graphics engine and improved the textures a bit, they could have saved a lot of disc space. Then again, people would bitch about the graphics.

jdelanoy (on 02 February 2010)

Oh, and you're reaching. Really, really far.

jdelanoy (on 02 February 2010)

Hephaestos says:
Though if you damage disc 1 and already fininshed it, then you can still play with your other 2 discs... not the case for PS3!

Damaging blu-ray discs, short of something like breaking them in half, is pretty close to impossible. I have had warhawk since it came out in August 2007, and I still play it a lot, and other people in my family do as well. As you can imagine, it gets dropped sometimes, which adds up to a lot of times since 2007. Even so, and even though it is almost 30 months old, it is just a tiny bit scratched.

Unless you are running your game discs through something like a blender/3-year-old, you are not going to damage PS3 games

welshbloke (on 02 February 2010)

Let the my disc is better than your disc war begin. This actually would make a good Harry Hill sketch if it were not for the fact that some people actual care. If you think it somehow vindicates the decision for Blu Ray then whatever.

Its on 3 discs its optimised for minimal disc swap even PS3 players are likely to swap discs when you switch off the game and play something else.

KeptoKnight (on 02 February 2010)

""One bad thing about multiple disc is that sometimes if you're on the next disc and later you realized that you missed out on an important side quest that can only be done during the previous disc.""

Wow interesting...

cliffyboy (on 02 February 2010)

well that sucks! for 360 owners plus they said the sound quality's not going to be on par with the PS3 version. And these game testers said that the PS3 version looks waay better then the 360 version

megaman79 (on 02 February 2010)

its kind of annoying. Just goes to show how neccesary BR discs have become.

Bring on 360 2 Wii 2 with BR.

Shonen (on 02 February 2010)

no big deal , you will just swap the disc 2 times ...i bet that PS3 owners will also swap discs on their PS3s more than 2 times while playing this game (I mean no one will beat the game with one sitting) and than you will want to play something else , or watch any BD movie ... No big deal at all ...

(I know PS3 fan boys you mock you if you own a 360 to death, bet rest sure that they know deep into their hearts that is not a big deal)

iLLmaticV3 (on 02 February 2010)

3 discs!? Blasphemy!

heywoodjablome (on 02 February 2010)

knowing square/enix there wont be a noticeable difference in quality between the two versions 3 discs are only relevant to the people who own both the 360 and ps3...so if you own both then uncompressed audio and video with only one disc should be the right choice(ps3) but owners of both systems will more likely follow their brand loyalty when they choose which console to purchase the game on

kuddles (on 02 February 2010)

I survived 4 discs with Lost Odyssey, I'm sure I can survive this.

hduser (on 02 February 2010)

So 3 x 8.5 GB (I assume it'll be dual layer) is about 25.5 GB. I think I recall the PS3 FF13 will be a dual layer BR game(please correct me if I'm wrong) at 50 GB.

huaxiong90 (on 02 February 2010)

Oh great...here we go...

fazz (on 02 February 2010)

Just 3 discs... great, since I'm getting this version :D

Nightwish224 (on 02 February 2010)

Omg, idk how I'm going to be able to swap 2 times.

emo_parker (on 02 February 2010)

Thanks SE for making FF13 extremely linear and keeping my disc swaps to a minimum!

blackops (on 02 February 2010)

@kowen.
Ild rather lose 1 blu ray disc and not have it at all than the other way around. It's like having a hot wife you can't screw most of the time

dahuman (on 02 February 2010)

don't use MGS4 as an example, MGS4 is fucking retarded to start with and they didn't have the technology of late 2009, good thing I always had my iphone with me when that shit was going on, and that's also one reason I'm having a hard time deciding on whether or not I should play it again since that whole install thing pisses me off.

aygie (on 02 February 2010)

@AlkamistStar The problem is the video compression, lack of uncompressed audio and being lesser quality than the PS3 version. Its not just about swapping discs, that just adds to the list of reasons not to get the Xbox 360 version.

AlkamistStar (on 02 February 2010)

Only swapping twice. What's the problem?

kowenicki (on 02 February 2010)

@blackops

and if you lose a disc from a single disc game you are still screwed... whats your point?

who loses discs anyway? lol. stop reaching....

Hephaestos (on 02 February 2010)

@blackops.
Though if you damage disc 1 and already fininshed it, then you can still play with your other 2 discs... not the case for PS3! (in otherwords, it's a pointless remark you made there).

There is no issue with disc swapping... changing discs twice takes much less time than installing the game for that matter =) (though still recomanded on 360 for better load)

richardhutnik (on 02 February 2010)

It takes less time to swap disks than it does to have to do the installs that MGS4 has. Play one chapter, and then wait anywhere between 5 to 20 minutes to play the next segment of the game? Again, number of disks mattering depends on number of disk swaps needed.

Considering trade-offs that matter regarding game systems, and costs involved with it, not sure that one can say Microsoft made a mistake here. They have a lead on the PS3 particularly because they went the DVD route.

Chris Hu (on 02 February 2010)

Two people below me already mentioned that this is very old news I knew about this already three month ago.

Kwaidd (on 02 February 2010)

"Swapping discs is not the biggest issue, The biggest issue is if one of the discs is lost or damaged then the other two are useless"

likewise if you only have one disc and it becomes lost or damaged, its useless. moot point

blackops (on 02 February 2010)

Swapping discs is not the biggest issue, The biggest issue is if one of the discs is lost or damaged then the other two are useless

dahuman (on 02 February 2010)

If there is an option to not have to physically swap a disc, I'd always go for that option, if I have no choice, then ah well fuck it not like I have a choice.

sepulnation1986 (on 02 February 2010)

"please enter disc 2 to continue" ... =) man, that sucks!!! i'm glad to have a ps3...

Smashed (on 02 February 2010)

@Kowenicki

Quit getting so personal about it, just a picture.

huaxiong90 (on 02 February 2010)

@Kowen: Ah, ok, I hear you then. :-)

Lyrikalstylez (on 02 February 2010)

Meh, I was gonna get the game but theres just too many games being released that has garnerd my attention more, So Ill eventually get the game later perhaps on my ps3, Im shocked...this could be the First multi game I might get for ps3 instead of my 360!!

perpride (on 02 February 2010)

this is like epic old news.

BUT YAY FFXIII REGARLDESS!!

kowenicki (on 02 February 2010)

@huaxiong

if it was in the original article I'd have no problem, it has been added here... thats poor.

kowenicki (on 02 February 2010)

I ask again, why has this fanboy/flamebait picture been added when it isnt in the otriginal article? very unprofessional.

huaxiong90 (on 02 February 2010)

@kowen: Flamebait? Dude...have a sense of humor.

OT: Old news.

Hyruken (on 02 February 2010)

Anyone who is even aware of the fact they are changing discs needs to get out and get some exercise before it is too late!

What is next, having a tube connected to your toilet next to your couch?

You should cut down on your pork life mate, get some exercise! :)

otoniel (on 02 February 2010)

this is old news
and why ppl complaint about swaping discs?
seriously the humanity get lazier and lazier
so sad

scottie (on 02 February 2010)

@ Domicinator - Disc swapping can be a big issues, depends on the game. If Wii Sports had a different disc for each different game that would be rubbish, and if GTA had a different disc for each quarter of the city that is also likely to be pants. It just depends whether the game involves lots of backtracking (I have no idea whether FFXIII will or not so I'm not gonna judge)

That said, the people who came in here to troll are pretty sad

weaveworld (on 02 February 2010)

They could make a nice package out of this... Love the multiple disc ps1 games! Just for their looks.

arsenicazure (on 02 February 2010)

FF is in the truest sense of the word.. a "VIDEO"game

epinefridis (on 02 February 2010)

@kowenicki
Even 1 month before the release, some people just can't accept that the one and only reason of getting a PS3 back in the day for a big percentage of PS2 owners, is now available on 360 too.
Anyway, 2/3 of the discs' space is FMV, so, doesn't really matters.
And the game seems mediocre at best, so, suit yourselves...

AugustusBot (on 02 February 2010)

noc about swapping discs.

also, haha @ 360 owners.

kowenicki (on 02 February 2010)

old... and whats with that ridiculous flamebait picture? very, very poor.

But just to say that two of the best 4 or 5 games I have played this gen are LO (4 discs) and ME2 (2 discs)... didn't make the slightest difference.

Domicinator (on 02 February 2010)

Switching discs is no big deal. Since becoming a PS3 owner, I have seen the benefits of having a BluRay drive in a console because of the amount of really nice looking content you can pack into one disc. (Uncharted 2 is the best example of this by far and large).

However, switching discs is a non issue. Spending your free time making fun of Xbox 360 owners because of this is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Yes, I have always wished that the 360 used something other than DVD, but in the end, it's really not a big deal.

RukiSama (on 02 February 2010)

disk swapping really sucks but, not cuz you have to get off the couch.. but, for example, look at Star Ocean 4.. once in disc 3 if you want to go back to earlier town you have to swap.. to come back swap again.. and again and again

TheConduit (on 02 February 2010)

It was either that or a significant drop in quality.

Gintoki (on 02 February 2010)

ROFL three discs! What an awesome boxart it will be!

arminuk (on 02 February 2010)

to be honest some people are really lazy they cant even move their ass to change the disc which will take afew second and they saying omg we are in 2010 , disc swapping sucks ps3 fans really need to get a life

V-r0cK (on 02 February 2010)

One nice thing about multiple disc was that Square would have nice disc arts such as on their Final Fantasy games like FFVIII and FFIX. Hopefully they'll do the same for this.

One bad thing about multiple disc is that sometimes if you're on the next disc and later you realized that you missed out on an important side quest that can only be done during the previous disc.

Badassbab (on 02 February 2010)

Wow big deal. I'm still most likely getting it on PS3. MGS4 had a few 1-3 min installs, it's much quicker to change discs.

assclown (on 02 February 2010)

swap disk suck!! we are in 2010 not 1950 :P

Xen (on 02 February 2010)

...

Some "news" this is.

http://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=6144

It was confirmed a little less than two freaking months ago.

Cypher1980 (on 02 February 2010)

Not really an issue....

Just played Mass Effect and had to change the disc twice. Actually encouraged me to take a much needed break.

Did not affect enjoyment of game one iota

Demotruk (on 02 February 2010)

It's like XBox owners live in a third world country. After playing for 15-20 hours they have to get off the couch and switch discs. Unfathomable.
