New Super Mario Bros Wii has hit another milestone today, 10 million in worldwide sales, with that milestone comes breaking Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas' record of fastest to sell 10 million copies on a single console.  The previous record was ten weeks and New Super Mario Bros smashes it at seven, no doubt this generation will continue to break sales records for previous generations.

Currently the game stands at 4.5 million in North America, 2.9 million in Japan, and 2.9 in others.  Along with that the game has amassed an estimated $610 million in revenue worldwide.  To say the game is selling like hotcakes would be an understatement, and isn't stopping any time soon.

Update: With adjustments New Super Mario Bros Wii has now sold 10 million in seven weeks not eight, an even more impressive record.

Only appropriate for Mario to re-establish his dominance of the market.

MaxwellGT2000 (on 15 January 2010)

Yeah the numbers were adjusted, I'll talk to Brett and update the article if need be.

fwap (on 15 January 2010)

Looks like New Super Mario Bros Wii might have done even better than this article says it did.

Judging by yet another update to its selling figures, Mario seems to have broke the 10 million worldwide figure in SEVEN WEEKS:

http://www.vgchartz.com/swlaunch.php?reg1=All&game1=New+Super+Mario+Bros.+Wii+-+Wii[35076]&reg2=All&game2=&reg3=All&game3=&weeks=25

That will make it even harder to beat.

TheWon (on 15 January 2010)

People saying LBP being called Mario would do the trick don't get it.. LBP is very different and not at all like Mario..
please, stop being so jealous and go play either or both games if you like them..

Exactly, but to be honest comparing Mario and LBP. Is like comparing Smash Bros to that Konami Fighters Dream Game.

funkylizard (on 15 January 2010)

@ Ostro "So mankind started counting with 0? We are in the year 2010, which makes it the 2010th year which again is part of the decade 01-10 :P"

Yes, mankind started counting at 0 which is why 2010 is the beginning of a new decade. Stick to playing video games... 2000 - 2009 is a decade (10 years) 2010 - 2019 is another. If you doubt, google it...

Yeah, the problem with Galaxy isn't just the fact that it's a 3D Mario. With the Wii's userbase, I'm sure they can make a Mario that can outsell Mario 64.

Galaxy is too complex in its gameplay, the physics make little sense, nor do the settings, really. It simply drifts too far away from what Mario stands for, in the name of gameplay innovation.

AnthonyW86 (on 15 January 2010)

I think the problem with Galaxy is it's location, it just doesn't feel like a mario world. A fantasy and colorfull mario world is much more appealing as a location than planets in a big black universe.

zztinko (on 15 January 2010)

Amazing, it just keeps getting better and btter.

I love Super Mario Galaxy but it is not hard to realize that many people have an issue controlling a character in a 3D environment. The truth is Galaxy is hard for people not used with 3D gaming. In the other hand, New Super Mario Bros Wii, despite being more difficult than Galaxy, is based in simpler gameplay that people take less time to be used with.

I'm not surprised 2D Mario outsells its 3D counterpart by a larger margin. I am very surprised to the fact Nintendo just recently appeared to realize that.

gigaSheik (on 14 January 2010)

When I see third parties with similar results I'll be impressed.

theARTIST0017 (on 14 January 2010)

Congrats

inu_1607 (on 14 January 2010)

Mario is God!! =P. I love this game

gichti (on 14 January 2010)

No wonder there were no big releases last year to trouble NSMBWii on this console. And it´s a game for gamers and casuals. And it´s Mario...
I feel pity for Little Big Planet...

Payasofobia (on 14 January 2010)

Actually...yes. We started counting with 0.

Beuli2 (on 14 January 2010)

To you all astonished that Galaxy should sell more, no, it shouldn't, because 2D Mario will always be more popular and there is nothing you can do to change that. Super Mario 64 is the next to go.

Ostro (on 14 January 2010)

Shonen (on 14 January 2010)

think thanks to NSMBW , mario galaxy will sell better than the first once that i think that more people are now aware of the fact the "Hey mario still awsome" i wanna play it ! ...

megaman79 (on 14 January 2010)

@mhsillen, i wonder why Sega haven't announced Project Needlemouse for Wii.
Sega must be frigging kicking themselves with stupidity if they don't do it. lol

ElRhodeo (on 14 January 2010)

I second that, this is how Galaxy should have sold... the gulf between NSMBWii and SMG sales will make Nintendo decide that innovating and pushing the limits of the Mario formula isn't worth it.

Azelover (on 14 January 2010)

People saying LBP being called Mario would do the trick don't get it.. LBP is very different and not at all like Mario..

please, stop being so jealous and go play either or both games if you like them..

mhsillen (on 14 January 2010)

I only wonder why sega does not create a new 2d sonic game
It would do well

Madanial (on 13 January 2010)

And i still waiting to buy this, after i finish my work.
Ugh, i wanna play it badly

BoleroOfFire (on 13 January 2010)

Great news! An awesome game having awesome sales is the way it should go. :-)

leo-j (on 13 January 2010)

I almost wish Little big planet was named "Super mario planet" and put on the Wii..

Just so it could sell to all those people that are interestd in a fun platformer..

LBP is underselling imo.

sjhillsa (on 13 January 2010)

Well done, credit where credit is due. Congrats Nintendo.

MasterZack (on 13 January 2010)

This is great. I love this game!

killeryoshis (on 13 January 2010)

:( nooooo Iwant the game to sel,but not better than galaxy. I thin Galaxy is undertracked. There is no way its been outsold already

Bobbuffalo (on 13 January 2010)

I am glad. This is a great game. Probably the best game of the last decade, besides Mario Kart wii and wii sports.

Well done Nintendo. Now please, don't wait another 20 years to release another SMB game on consoles ok?

riders42 (on 13 January 2010)

I love this game. Its so good.

guiduc (on 13 January 2010)

New Super Mario Bros Wii won 2 awards on ING! It's awesome! Nintendo really are the masters of platforming. This game made my year.

We can't get enough 2D Mario games in a gen...

Beuli2 (on 13 January 2010)

"Congrats Ninty!!!
Give us another 2d mario the next gen!!!"

No, they MUST another this generation. And it will be better than NSMB Wii!

Pavolink (on 13 January 2010)

Congrats Ninty!!!
Give us another 2d mario the next gen!!!

sirroman (on 13 January 2010)

Now, that is something, huh? Amazing sales.

But the real shock would be if it bested MW2 in U.S.A. sales like Fils-Aime bet.

axumblade (on 13 January 2010)

Definitely well deserved. I love this game. :D

Sapphire (on 13 January 2010)

deserves it

BoneyBoy (on 13 January 2010)

GREAT GAME!! GREAT SALES!!!

fwap (on 13 January 2010)

@eliasg

Do you need a shoulder to cry on?

Metallicube (on 13 January 2010)

Ha, and to think some naysayers actually thought this game would struggle to best Galaxy's 8 million sales lifetime. Though I guess I can't really blame them. Even a Nintendo fan and optimist like me expected around 15 million for the game LTD, and it's already 2/3 the way there! This game could reach 25-30 million when it's all said and done.

JUG (on 13 January 2010)

@Jack 100,

Not really. People know this, but the commonly held practice is just to accept that the first "decade" only had 9 years - which makes it easier for every decade since. No one thinks the 40s started in 1941, it started in 1940.

jack100 (on 13 January 2010)

this game deserves the record......it's THAT GOOD.

@Diglet that's a common misconception, the new decade starts at 2011, like the new millinium started in 2001. there's no zero year, the first year was 1, then 2, so the decade becomes every year between 1 - 10, making 11 the start of the next decade.

Pepe2009 (on 13 January 2010)

Now all they need is a Mario Party that you can play online and they will be really raking in the "Cash"

Ninten78 (on 13 January 2010)

I just got it today! LOVE IT

TheWon (on 13 January 2010)

There is no power greater than the power of Mario!

Diglet (on 13 January 2010)

The decade ended. We are in 2010 now. It started at the beginning of of 2000 and it ended at the end of 2009.

FreeTalkLive (on 13 January 2010)

There are still 50 weeks left in the decade. Maybe this game will sell 20 million copies this decade? Only time will tell.

Bornswavia (on 13 January 2010)

God, Nintendo sales the same game year after year and yet they are so amazing..

Tayne (on 13 January 2010)

Great job Nintendo! Great game!

gvangoeverden (on 13 January 2010)

wow thats insane. and we all know that nintendo games having staying power for years so imagine how many this will sell in its life time if its already done that in 8 weeks

Ostro (on 13 January 2010)

Hm, maybe could have been even faster if they released it all over the world at the same time!?

that Monopoly game kicks ass btw, got it in my cupboard :3

BornFirst. (on 13 January 2010)

The game deserves to do this well. best game i have played in a long time

Arius Dion (on 13 January 2010)

Love that Monopoly board!

Aidman (on 13 January 2010)

I really do love Batman but Nintendo is doing freaking awesome well than Nolan.

Nintendogamer (on 13 January 2010)

@Maxwell

It says account inactive when I click on your link.

Dv8thwonder (on 13 January 2010)

20 million sold is not a 'if' it is a when and from the looks of this it will be very soon.

Gintoki (on 13 January 2010)

Awesome!

MaxwellGT2000 (on 13 January 2010)

Also I love no one has commented on my Nintendo "Monopoly" image I used for the article, see it works on two levels :-D

Cheebee (on 13 January 2010)

Insane. :-D

Nintendogamer (on 13 January 2010)

That picture of NSMBWii monopoly? could Nintendo be releasing that in shops as a celebtration, I can see that selling well also. Well done NSMBWii, well deserved.

@Smeags

Remember Iwata said NSMBWii is not the end of Mario platforming ;)

BoneArk (on 13 January 2010)

Congrats Nintendo. =)

Smeags (on 13 January 2010)

Hotcakes have nothing on this game! :-D

Well done Mario, it's good to see you in 2D again. Hopefully there's more where that came from!

This and Project Needlemouse... *sheds tear*

Zucas (on 13 January 2010)

Just insane how well this game is selling and we don't even have the sales for the rest of the region for last week. Came out at the end of the decade, and there is no doubt that this is one of the, if not the, biggest games of the decade. Congrats to Nintendo and congrats to gamers for getting this game. With this and MW2, seems like we ended the decade with a bang to enter an explosive new one.
